The "first season was great, second season sucked" comment is so common and ubiquitous that I can't help feeling there's another reason behind it, besides the second season actually sucking - which to me, given how frequently I hear that phrase, is far from likely. There are a few possible reasons for this:

1. The expectations of the viewer are set to expect more of the same. If season one was so great, why would they change anything? Any different plot lines, or characters, or music, or anything, would disrupt this expectation and cause a lessened viewing experience.

2. The gap between seasons is large enough that all the poor parts of the show have been forgotten, leaving only the vague memory of something awesome. The first season was like the honeymoon period of a relationship: you've just met and you're looking over all her flaws, having a great time. After the first season is over, you're into the break up. It's al this point that you start remembering all the great moments, all the best bits. You again overlook all her flaws and want her back. Then, when season 2 starts, you're back together, and suddenly all her annoying habits, her nail biting, her high pitched, whiny voice, that stupid laugh, they're all at the forefront of your mind. She isn't actually any different, just your expectations and experience are.

3. The gap between seasons was so long that any attachment to the characters you did have has thoroughly evaporated, leaving the emotional plot devices completely ineffective.

My solution to both these problems is to pay no attention to seasons and only watch shows that have 4 or 5 seasons completely released.

tl;dr expectations fuck up the experience of a shows second season; solution: watch all seasons back to back.

I watched the first and second season back to back, I just didn't really enjoy the change in direction in season 2 with fringe, which I won't name for the sake of spoilers.

If season two was the latest season then I'll just have to disagree with you. I thought it was just as, if not more, entertaining than the previous.

v was awful

chuck was and is awesome

I wouldn't say awful, but I did nearly say "With the exception of V, all great shows". It felt as though, each episode, I'd spend most of the time waiting for something to happen. Most of the plot is just filler, it's the dragon ball z of scifi.
