The Wire Season 1 Review (mild spoilers)

image: the%20wire%20poster

I've seen the whole of the first season and I've tried to bring myself to watch the second but I can't. Why? It bores me. There seems to be a distinct lack of anything gripping - I can't build a connection with the characters (probably fuelled by the huge cast with no real protagonist) and the aspects of the show which really interested me were a minimal factor (omar & bubbles in particular were fantastic). There's also a clear shortage of hot women and humour to lighten the mood (with the exception of this scene). Sure, it's not a comedy, but The Sopranos for example has shown me some of the funniest scenes I've seen in a series and I think it's important to the atmosphere of any drama.

I don't really see what makes this show so special to so many people, critics or viewers. It's widely considered the best TV show around, yet I just don't see it. I do appreciate the intricate subplots, and the way that the show highlights two sides to every story, giving an overview of how so many people are involved in the narcotics industry, including the user, the dealers, and the officers and more, whilst paralleling relationships between them. By far the best scene from the first season was this (click here).

There are pros and cons to any series, but The Wire is just not doing it for me. What I do want to know is if anyone else had the same difficulties, and why they feel I should keep watching the show, if I should at all.

You can find more information about The Wire here and here.

Mad Men is probably the best TV show I've seen, at least for drama. Incredibly in-depth, with brilliant attention to detail and incredible performances.

im just overhyping it since i watched all seasons like 2 weeks ago :P

gotta wait few more months to give a better comment, now the whole serie just feels epic

I may come back to it at some point, but I really doubt it, as it's been over a month since I finished the first season already. Only reason I wrote this now is because I considered watching season 2 but I decided against it.

it gets better imo. its a good show but not the best for me
russel crow or gtfo!
whats it about?
"Each season of The Wire focuses on a different facet of the city of Baltimore. They are, in order: the illegal drug trade, the port system, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media. The large cast consists mainly of character actors who are little known for their other roles. Simon has said that despite its presentation as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals, and how whether you're a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge or a lawyer, you are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution you've committed to."

I've not seen the show but in theory that seems like a good show.
Parent
Well it's the most acclaimed show out there, so I'd check it out at least.

Stopped watching after the second season lol, also bored me. Show felt like having a slow progress too :/
Finished watching the last episode of 5th today, put it off for a month or more. Great show, best i've watched by some distance.
It's almost as if the 'building time' is both the strength and weakness of the series though, based on the comments here. Whilst giving a background, detail, and strength to the storyline, it's also slowing down all the progression and making me lose interest.
If you've got the time to watch them in quick succession when something good starts happening, you won't be disapointed. Appreciated it can sometimes be slow, but I find the sub-plots are actually interesting which means I don't mind when they take time inbetween the main plot.

actually its really good if you dont need explosions all the time to enjoy a story
You're over analysing for the sake of analysing. You think you are able to spot pacing deficiencies in a show which has recieved universal critical acclaim for it's patience and attention to detail?

If your honest opinion is that that you get bored because the show isn't 'exciting' enough then you'd be better off watching Die Hard 4. Bruce Willis climbs onto a Jet Plane.
If I said the show bored me and left it at that it would've been an awful journal. The pace of the show was a disappointment for me, but the fact that it's received universal critical acclaim is what's confusing me. I just don't see what's so good about the show. I'll come back to season 2 in a bit when I'm out of things to watch, maybe I'll get into it then.

You don't know or you don't see?

If you've aknowledged the acclaim then you already know what is good about the show. Whether you agree or not isn't really the point you're making.

Both. I've seen numerous high ratings but not read into why they've been earned.
