newsweek says it's Finland:
www.newsweek.com/2010/08/15/interactive-infographic-of-the-worlds-best-countries.html
and here is how the calculated it: www.newsweek.com/2010/08/15/world-s-best-countries-categories-metrics-and-methodology.html

Happiest Countries (but i guess non-scientific):

1. finland

Dont know who made this list but.. I wouldnt live in that cold place.

33. Hungary

Are you kidding me? Yes its a good country if you have a good job, else you are fucked.
guess they didnt care about the nature ;)
Parent
You mean temperature...

Cold = less bikinis = FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU
Parent
well, yeah :D
Parent
scandanavian countries seem to do rly well on those lists :p
Parent
i think they made the list based on economy, i heard unemployed fins get lots of money from the government by doing nothing :DD Good country idd!
Parent
yeah, its 13.62€/day to me when im unemployed
Parent
i had 396 euro a month when i was unemployed so kinda the same
Parent
400€ a month?

People get moar here D:
Parent
Ye but im living in home and my parents are earning too much, thats why i dont earn much money now
Parent
unemployed people gets money? sounds amazing
South Korea needs it so I can play games 24/7 without a job
Parent
Did you even look at the countries which are ranked lower ?
Parent
Like Kuwait ?:)
Parent
Well, in finland when ur unemployed they pay ur whole rent (up to 600e, or was it 650e?). And u get 417e / month, + they pay ur dinner table, bed, and freezer. (If u got a baby, she/he will get everything that babys need for living). I got few friends who lives like this. Some of them got drug problems, baby(s) and some of them are unemployed.

And finnish school system works great imo, u don't need to pay anything, including food, books and lessons. After junior high, if u go to vocational school / highschool, u have to start paying for books (food is still free, lessons are free, etc) basically only thing u need to pay for is books. but u'll get studen allowance, which is max 94e/month (depends how much ur parents earn) and that is more than enough to cover ur book expenses. (atleast for me it was) . and in university u get max 300e / month.

So in my opinion, finland is good country to live :). tho, this country is getting more and more paternalistic society, which is not a good thing. :/

But finlands national debt is 72 859 944 645e from last check and its not going to stop raising. in 5years, IMF is predicting that finlands national debt is 76% from gross domestic product. :/

This text should have some grammar mistakes, since its close to 4 am. :7
Parent
Thanks really.

Always nice to see some useful comments :)
Parent
I think that weather isnt enough good reason to say which country sucks and which not
It's just an opinion what you like cold / hot / rainy or w/e

Atleast I like it that we have cold winters and hot summers so it's not same all the time on summer you can take sun, hang outside and so and on winter you can play ice hockey outside and everything else winter stuff
Parent
Sure it's personal, but I guess if you ask 10 ppl 8-9 will say warm > cold. Well there is a reason why ppl not living on the antartics :)
Parent
haha poland
they beat chile xD
Parent
what do you want, solid position imo

we have all the africa crushed!

QuoteA boy in Zimbabwe going shopping with the equivalant of 3 US dollars

The most poor country in the world it says in the same web page, i was like wtf that boy is happy he has lots of money but then :/
yoa, inflation is so high in zimbabwe, that they pretty much dont use money and deal/trade in goods/natural sources
Parent
yeh inflation is so high :/
Parent
they use american dollar
Parent
Zimbabwaanse Dollar*
Parent
They use american dollar instead of Zimbabwaanse Dollar in trading
Parent
oh yee with trading. but the national valuta is barely used :D
Parent
1 man die = sad
10 die = very sad
1 milliion die = statistic
the death of a person isn't sad.
Parent
i would be sad if you'd die :(
Parent
Wtf the life expectancy for Belgium is like 76, not 72 :/

And the education is ranking is only based on literacy and amount of years you go to school lol...

Political is also bs... 6.67 for participation? We're forced by law to vote, how the fuck could it be that low then? And stability gets 84, lol'd.

Crappy list.
ure wrong on the education list, i think e.g. germans go rly long to school but are quite low on that list?
Parent
average years of schooling: BEL 15,9y : GER 15,9y
Parent
where the hell do you see that :D
Parent
you can click on 2 countries and they are compared on the right then. the you have education and economy and so on
Parent
i added the explanation of how they calculated that stuff
Parent
Yeah, as I thought, they based it solely of litteracy rate and years of going to school.

Doesn't say anything about education quality though imo...
Parent
its newsweek ;D
Parent
I'm not familiar with newsweek.
Parent
ye i thought the same rofl,
the belgian stats are all fked up ^^
theres no way whatsoever that Netherlands is ranked better for education then Belgium
Parent
why is that? :D
Parent
I've read numerous articles where Belgium and Finland where the top two countries considering education, and with numerous I mean a hell of a fucking lot ( made a study about it ). This is the first article that disagrees.
Parent
better do my uni in belgium then
Parent
and I suppose mine would be the second?
Parent
You observe very well sir, splendit.

Edit : Oh please, I just read your "article", that is based on how far you can go if you graduate cum laude from one of those universities.

The average quality of schooling has nothing to do with this, sorry to dissapoint you.
Parent
hmm yeah, i was wondering too. but they took the average years of schooling into calculation too. there it says belgium has 15,9 and the dutchies 19,7. wtf 19,7! :O
Parent
20 years? only ppl who go to uni, wich is like 6% or smth x]
Parent
dunno where they got that from :/
Parent
me neither :D i dont know what they all count tho, first 8 years of kidschool :D, 4/5/6 years of highschool, then 4 years college and 1 year uni and 2-4 years specialisation or 4 years uni and 2-4 specialisation

AFAIK!
Parent
they counted it like this:
Quote1. Education

Academic Achievement

Combined universal score on TIMSS and/ or PISA tests using Eric Hanushek's normalization methodology. For schools that do not administer these tests, an achievement score was imputed by doing a regression of literacy rate (CIA World Factbook) and average years of schooling against the universal score. [1],[2]

Quick Rationale: Captures overall efficacy of system and differentiates developing countries. Measures education achievement.

Note: The data originally published in our interactive did not reflect an adjustment made to our education index meant to offset a bias towards more developed nations and account for the great strides made by certain developing nations in recent years. As part of this change, Finland’s education score rose to 102 from 100 to account for the country’s perfect scores on each of the education metrics.
Parent
australia 20.5 years of education :D
Parent
Quote4/5/6 years of highschool

Rly? Ur not forced to stay in school untill 18?
Parent
got:

vmbo - 4y
havo - 5y
vwo/gym - 6y

with a vmbo grade ure forced to do college (MBO) cuz u arent 18

havo grade is enough when u arent 18, doesnt force you to do smth else, but 99% still do it (HBO)

vwo same story, tho they can chose for HBO or UNI
Parent
ah ok now I get it :D
Parent
forced to go to school until the age of 16 in holland
Parent
and still the list says Netherlands has better education then Belgium :D
Parent
met vmbo diploma tot je 18e
Parent

Parent
It's about education, not just uni's... :)

Besides, unless I'm mistaken, you have to pay a shitload of money to get in most of those unis... :)

E: Notice how finland isn't on there either :)
Parent
Exactly.

Btw, briefly explain me that League of Legend stuff I've been hearing so much about. (^^)
Parent
Kinda looks like WoW played on ET format (3v3 and 5v5 matches only)

Join #LoL.et btw :P

Basically, you pick a summoner before each match (which is the character you'll control)

Each summoner has unique abilities, skills and stats. (some have more health, others move faster, attack faster, better at spells, etc) You then got to play with your team and attempt to destroy the opponents Nexus (which is a big building that spawns minions) Minions are little weak guys that get spawned every 30 sec or so and killing them gives XP and Gold.

Every time you level up you can add it to one of your skills to improve its power. With gold you can buy items to enhance your stats.

Slaying an enemy summoner gives more money, but is naturally more difficult. Therefore, not dying is just as important as slaying them, since, each kill they make gives them quite a bunch of money which leads to better stats, which means your team will get in trouble if you die a lot.

There are turrets placed on the entire map, half of them are yours, defending them is essential, since they prevent champions from running to your base. Likewise, destroying the opponent's turrets is a necessity to advance.

A great deal of teamwork, strategy and fast thinking is required in order to be succesful.

That's why most people prefer to play with people they know, because you often get placed in a match with people that aren't that good. :)
Parent
Briefly? (:DD)

Tnx for the reply though! might give it a try
Parent
do you know anything about going on 'stage' to harvard/cambridge etc? as expensive then too?
Parent
For those schools it's even worse, your grades that you got throughout your entire life will be screened and you'll get interviewed so they can see if you got the right attitude for it...

I visited Oxford when I was in England and they told me this.

They also got to pay a shitload of money

Dunno about stages, what do you mean by that?
Parent
internship stuff, dunno. in my 3rd year i can go on 'stage' can do that at a company in NL, but also go to a college/uni in a forgeign country, id just like to go to stuff like harvard or oxford, no idea tho if i already have to safe money :D
Parent
You mean to study there? Or to work?

Normally your uni should pay for it (or it should be free anyway since stage means extra people working there for no money)

But dunno if they'd pay for Harvard and shit, might be way too expensive, except if they have reduced prices or sth, idk :D
Parent
i dont how actually if u study there then or work x]
Parent
an internship would mean you would work there, being a foreign "exchange" student however, is a completely different case.

and for me, unaffordable (well, I could have been able to afford it, but went to travel instead :D:D:D)
Parent
dunno, just started my first year HBO, and you could follow ure stage at foreign countries at colleges there, thats all i heard
Parent
wow man u go traveling around with nice mates? i wish i cud do the same:pppp
Parent
hehe yes was fun :P

I do again next year :P:P
Parent
You can study at a very cheap rate there. That's why a lot of british are complaining that we can go study there quite cheaply (it's intra-EU)
I did my internship in Turkey and didn't had to pay anything to enter school. It's an arrangement between the schools, you should check out how your school did it but it will be much more cheaper for you then for british students at oxford.
Parent
that would be nice :)
Parent
Guess we ain't first because of all that minaret/kadaffi shit :P
No idea how you dodged the world wars but well played.
Parent
first comment today after all that ec bullshit which made me smile ;) ty.
Parent
newsweek rank poland 17th in education? GOOD JOKE (= this ranking is shit)
8th place for tiny NL..hehehehe
5th place for really tiny Luxembourg xD
Parent
Richest country in the world though.
Parent
wow!
i found something on wikipedia, but its still no. 2 there ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita

statistics though :)

aaaaand: on another page they say its liechtenstein xD
Parent
I only trust World Bank.
Parent
laughing my ass off.. these rankings are total bullshit.

australia is #9 in political environment even tough half the country doesnt even vote, and dont let me get started about these swedes banning mosques to save their beautiful horizons.

p.s. israel #22 ?! tell that to the people getting bombed on a daily base.
It's more about the level of democracy, justice, how stable a government + how corrupt/efficient, etc... A lot of European countries are in Afghanistan too, it doesn't change anything about their ranking at the political environment.
Parent
malta not even listed :(
its called Italy
Parent
we have nothing to do with Italy though, england where the last country who conquered us :p

we're republican & independent for 40 years now (they left after ww2)
Parent
thanks now learnt something new again
Parent
Lebanon isnt listed too xD
Parent
When buying a car in Denmark one has to pay 25% VAT to the import price of the vehicle and then a 180% registration tax on top. That means when a car sells for $20 000, you have to pay an additional $45 000 as taxes for the government (total of $65 000). That’s why people in Denmark ride bikes
lol, you said lol first, lol
Parent
Ah, that's why adi came up with Aalborg LAN, to buy himself a car!
Parent
cars are cheaper though than in other countries afaik, so i could buy a car in denmark and use it in germany w/o paying those taxes!?
Parent
I thought it's only that high for luxury cars such as Porsche?
Parent
Denmarkrestevmate has car!
Parent
finland so good because polar bear
yes.

4 University of California Berkeley 6 4 4 28

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 Cornell University 4 5 9 22
Parent
now count all universities and see the avarage level of education per person. I still think it highly overrated.
Parent
Americans dumb is a stereotype. Ofc you cant ignore it cause you hear that everywhere. Same as polish people = poor.
Parent
its not only a stereotype.
Parent
ok well we wont agree on this :) I dont even care to be honest how smart americans are
Parent
neither do i actually :p
Parent
1. Denmark – 8,2 points

Haha beat that!
Finns are the master race
das Champions ! Now Krosan, gtfo
I'm so happy!
finlands education is overrated imo.
a friend of mine was there for a semester to study and all he did was partying the whole time.
even if he partied the night before an exam and was totally drunk, he was the best in class.
maybe he is awesome?
Parent
Did he study german? lol
When they praise the finnish education they usually mean the elementary school, junior high and high school.. Nothing bad to say about universities either.
Parent
Your friend is a genius
