2 monitors = lower fps?

hello.. i wonder if a second monitor (using the extended monitor mode) would lower my fps in ET. Et would still be running in the main monitor (so actually the laptops one) while the second one is just for other stuff (irc,msn,foobar,....).

also: would i always minimize or "deactivate" ET on the main monitor when i e.g. answer on msn on the second monitor?

last but not least: if i also add my 42" tv (so 3 monitors) would that lower my fps?
i planned on "copying" the second monitor (some 25" or smth) with the 42" tv monitor (e.g. when i watch a dvd). dunnow if that explenation is understandable :D

thx bb

depends on ur graphic card
(giggle).. no, your fps will not be lower.

"copying" -> clone.
thanks, well i want to use the extended monitor mode and at the same time clone the extended monitor to my tv. i guess i will do this with an hdmi extender.

Like hanibal said, it depends somewhat on your graphics card. Usually you can simply use different refresh rates for the different monitors you connect, but that has to do with refresh rates, not with FPS. Since ET is a more CPU intensive game rather than a GPU intensive game, I can not imagine that your FPS will be affected by using a second monitor.

You could also put in a second (cheap and simple) videocard and connect the TV and second monitor to that and play ET on your first videocard. Should work.

cant put in a second video card since i only have my laptop :)
also its not only about ET but also about other games.

Anyway.. i guess i will just disabled the second monitor when playing.. actually i would have to sincei planned to have way more programms running in the backround when i have my 2nd monitor (for example teamviewer for managing/working on my homeserver, foobar, etc etc.. everything which i often use but mostly exit since i dont have enough "place" on one monitor for all that). and since all those programs take ressources i would have to end them anyway when playing.. and while that i can also disable the second display with "win key + n".

but i guess it wont effect the fps anyway in most games.. and if, then only without rly noticing it :)

if you are simply switching from the main laptop display to an attached monitor you will not notice any fps decrease whatsoever. Simply has nothing to do with it. You will most likely enjoy a better refresh rate on your attached monitor though ;-)

It can result in lower FPS, but it won't be much. I tested it on my PC (profile) with my two old monitors both on 1024*768. It resulted in 3 fps less in averige, won't be a problem if your PC (mainly graphics) is decent enough.

NOOOB BARRIOS OMG

The best thing to do is try it and see :)
not gonna buy a 26" monitor for 300€ and then find out that it slows down everything like hell ;D

but it looks like i will be fine :)
Parent
I had it for some years and I think it affected gaming slightly. The fps difference wasn't really noticeable (didn't ever compare with timedemo or so) but somehow it gave the feeling that it's not running as well
well since it wont be possible anyway to have ET active on minitor one and IRC active on monitor two (without minimizing ET when switching to the second monitor for mirc) i thought about disabling the second monitor when playing. i guess this will be the same with every game.
Parent
I cant run slac using 2 monitors it wont let me keep the ET window active.
Technically it will but you're not gonna notice it at all since your FPS won't be higher than 125 anyway. It probably won't make a difference with any game at all.

You will have to minizie ET to use the second monitor.

Copying the second to a third monitor might make you lose 3fps if you had 300fps stable (it obviously uses some of your gfx card's power), so in other words no it won't be a problem.

Also the second and third monitor will run at ET's resolution when ET is running, so you have to run ET at your normal desktop resolution.

I used to use a 22" for ET and a second for msn etc. Works fine, but it can be distracting.
about the fps.. that sounds good.

about the resolution: that sucks because:

my laptops monitor only supports 1680x1050.. i use the same resolution for playing ET. but my tv aswell as my 2nd monitor would have a resulotion of 1920x1080. so whenever i run ET the second monitor will switch to 1680x1050 ? also bad that it wont rly work to have ET active + IRC at the same time on two different monitors :(
Parent
Quoteso whenever i run ET the second monitor will switch to 1680x1050

Yea unfortunately. But if you run ET in window mode then it will solve this problem. Just adjust the r_customheight width etc stuff till it fits the screen as much as possible, so it looks like full screen.

Hmm, I don't think you have to minimize, my bad. If you just press alt + tab it will switch to the next window, and as long as the next window is placed on the second monitor ET won't minimize (not sure if that makes sense). Obviously that's not practical, so I guess really you have to minimize ET :(
Parent
hmm but window mode normally needs more ressources?

the thing is: when deactivating ET, i often get kicked from servers :(

for the reply below: no i have one hdmi output.

main screen: laptops one (since it is a laptop)
second: the 26" screen
third: 42" tv.

to use the third screen, i would clone the second screen with an hdmi extender.. cant thign of any other solution (and actually that would jsut be fine :) )
Parent
didnt mean hdmi extender but hdmi splitter :>
Parent
Ah, if it's a splitter then it won't change your gfx card's performance at all. Your gfx card will have nothing to do with powering the 3rd tv screen. Why would ET take more resources in window mode? Never heard of that.
Parent
i think i read that some years ago.. that games in window mode need more ressources than in fullscreen mode :o

anyway, check my reply to ronner above.. about disabling the second display when gaming :)
Parent
btw you are connecting the tv screen directly to your PC's graphic card right? So you will have 3 devices connected to the gfx card?
Parent
depend on r_mode (i hasn't read)
I haven't had FPS issues running ET @ 1920x1080 on my main monitor with a second monitor also hooked up *shrug*
