depends if what you use your phone for or if you just want a new toy. personally i'd go blackberry/nokia/something with a proper keyboard just because it saves a lot of time
there are good alternatives to iphone too like desire that arent as locked in
i have a nokia n900 (posting from it actually) and its a phenomenal piece of kit but at the same time i wouldnt recommend it to non-techy friends
apple recently admitted they "arent as smart as nokia" which isn't really surprising
I have one, it's the best phone I have ever had or seen. The screen is so sharp that sometimes I think the resolution is better than on my laptop.
Designwise, it's a must have! Really like the elegance of it.
Applications wise you got absolutely everything! Just yesterday I bought a application that allows me use my iphone as a keyboard and mice for my laptop.
SE X10 is a really nice phone, Android 2.1 will be released for it soon. Best phone if you don't mind having an older OS version. The changes SE makes in Android are really good for the preformance, so imo it's worth the waiting for new OS version.
For the rest I would say HTC has nice android phones and Nokia N8 is a good phone too with a great camera (for a phone).
But the iPhone 4 is a good choice too, still one of the best phones out on the market, personally I don't think the design and apple logo are worth the expensive price tag.
it really does just depend how you want to use your phone? ive had most phones on the market as my best mate the head handset buyer for t-mobile uk. ive kept the iphone 4 , purely down to its a tool to have kicking about in your pocket, the camera's ok....not the best by far but the video quality is good. the desire HD is nice and HTC have really got their shit together, but if youll be using e-mails a lot, you cant beat a blackberry, i just tried the new operating system , blackberry os6, and its real sweet. the 9780 is out in a week and its half the price of the torch, with exactly the same features.
its all about how you use it day to day, but overall, blackberry 9780 is what id go for!
Im going to buy HTC in christmas but i dont know which one and it is hard to choice because some of them are so expensive so atm i tought about wildfire because it is cheap but also resolution and some other things are shit . ( i wanna buy legend or desire:))

agreed. symbian was once $$, now shit. maemo is sweet but still to get the most out of it you have to be a dev/knowledgable. hopefully meego will build on maemo but bring improvements for usability for the general public.

personally, i prefer the iphone 4, simply because it's got everything i need and i'm used to the iphone
using the galaxy s, the only thing i thought was better on it than the iphone 4 was the swype function, which takes a lot of getting used to and is only a little faster

HTC desire seems pretty sick, with an amazing interface, but i've not used it enough to say much more than that
if you've owned an iphone before and liked it, i'd say get the iphone 4 - the only real issue with it is the price, but i was given mine anyway

Overpriced for starters... And isn't that good anyway, still many flaws in the design.
Samsung has very good smartphones lately though, check them out.
