Bar Jobs

Thinking of getting a bar job in a club over summer.

Has anyone had a bar job at all, if so was it in an actual bar, or a club, how did you find it?

If not, feel free to post your current job status. I'm currently employed in retail.

That is all.

i'd definitely come to a bar with you as the tender ;)
I'm working at the expo in Stuttgart, it's 9.50€ per hour and if the exhibitors book you for 4 hours and the work is done after 2hours you still get the money for 4 hours!
gl dude it sux
i worked in rimini, club live.
Though you should go to chersonisoss, the place is crowded by english man!
ask unblind , he's working in some famous gaybar
Talk to sas1.
I am working in our own Bar / Cocktailbar for 3 years now and it isnt as nice as it seems.

You have to deal daily with drunken retards and always have to be nice to everyone. Stop smiling and stop concentrating is a no go. After every day your feet and neck will hurt like hell, because you have to stand like 7-8 hours on one position without any breaks, where you can sit. If you are unlucky and a nonsmoker then you might have to breath all night long smoke. It is a really hard job where you always have to concentrate (for example when you are serving the drinks ). Most important is that you have to talk, talk and talk...with EVERYONE. eventho you dont like to - You have to talk, because a guest comes to a bar, to TALK with someone ;) After closing time you will get a headache, because of the loud music.

Well it has also its positive sides...

Sometimes you met knew nice people or you can listen to nice music. It is also cool that you get the drinks and meals for free ...

Money should be about 5-7 eu per hour (sometimes + tip). Well since im working in our own bar, i dont get any money except my tip.... lol :p
illegal to smoke inside here so thats no problem :D
Parent
there are smokingareas and nonsmoking areas :P if you are unlucky, then you have to work in a smokingarea
Parent
no

it is illegal

to smoke inside any (public) building

not many outdoor bars in the uk ;D
Parent
Oh different law in germany then :p
Parent
Have to agree with a lot of this, apart from the talking to people.

Talking with people makes the job bearable imo, but if you're working late and the music is loud OR the person you're serving is an asshole, then you can't talk with the customer and them shift seems to last 10x longer.
Parent
Ye, sometimes it is nice to talk with people, but it can be really annoying after some time. If your neck hurts, you are stressed and have a headache then you mostly dont want to talk anymore :P ..Own experience :]
Parent
ur just not the man for the job...

i love talking with unknown ppl, always try to find a job where i can chitchat with customers as much as i want
Parent
sure i am ;) i also like to talk to people....but there are always days, where you are annoyed of that !

i just listed all the negative points...i tried to prevent him to think that this job is only about drinking, making party and meeting hot girls
Parent
Well put :D
In Canada/USA there are no bar/clubs/pubs that allow you to smoke inside.
So that's a good thing :D

I do agree with you on the "Stop smiling and stop concentrating is a no go" part.
I've been working at BOSS nightclub in BC, Canada for the past 2 years, and there are days where you just don't feel it that night and you don't want to talk. But you have to keep it up.

I did that for 3 hours straight, and I got pulled aside. LOL
But there are many advantages from the job.
Meet a lot of different types of people.
Meet beautiful girls, and the tips are very nice :DDD
Parent
depends if you are working in a pub or at the club :P

im working in a pub / cocktailbar in our small city ....70% of my guests are over 30 years
Parent
yeah, it would obvs be different from NA pubs/clubs/bars.

lol 30 year old women, in there prime. lol but i cant see EU older women being good looking.
Parent
Worked a village bar for a year or summin on and off, was alright. More fun when its people your age though.
its quite a good way to meet people but the money isn't great, if you can get something cash in hand you'll probably make a bit more and ofc that could be tax free if you forgot to declare your income

you might enjoy it or you might hate it theres only one way to find out :D

any specific questions go ahead, mightybro is right im the best gay barman
True, not everyone can be a bartender to be honestly. People with a weak personality have no chance in this - lets call it - " buisness".
Parent
I'm sorry, But that is the most retarded thing i have ever heard...
How do you NOT DECLARE your income?

The government knows everything about how much you make. what job you are working at.
are you retarded? you know the paperwork you fill out before you start your first shift? The paper that you put your SIN number on?
lol thats how they trace your pension and everything work/money related.
Parent
You are aware that BC != EU right?
Parent
BC is in canada you goof.
no wonder you dont know. your german..
Parent
That's why I put the "is not equal" symbol in the middle you goof.

No wonder you don't know. You're North American. Your statement about >30 year old EU women made it clear that you're oblivious.
Parent
LOL, what a loser.
Parent
Because you know fuck all?
Parent
NA milfs are hotter.
Parent
Made that study yourself or got any references?
Parent
lol.

years of opened eyes.
Parent
So you've seen EU MILFS?
Parent
nope, that's my point.
Been to Europe many times. School, work, vacation.

Seen a few, but not many.
Parent
"cash in hand" as in, they give you money at the end of the day and it doesn't go through the books.........
Parent
under the table.
Parent
if you want to sit at the table with a 320 pound 1 metre tall woman at the end of the day, yes!
Parent
what? lol
That's what it's called. "Under The Table"(cash)
But usually that's not like a bar/pub/club job.
that's usually only for tiny pvt business's.
Parent
bar manager for a major chain the last 3 years here ;}}
Parent
well, propz to you. :DD

rimi has worked in a bar afaik.

I myself have worked for half a summer at a disko, it's really fun the things with neck/feet problems ain't that big of a deal.

Drink with the costumers, flirt with the ladies chill out and feel like you're part of the crew.
Í was wasted almost the whole time, and it really gave me some awesome memories.

Working at a pub is pretty booring unless you have the same hobbies as the costumers.
You should try get a job on a cruise ship, I know someone who is a fitness instructor and he was working on a ship, good pay , tax free, holiday, although bar jobs on cruisers are rare :|
no

play with saiko all summer and go to lans with us all summer!
worked in bar next to club was very very busy and tiring but pretty good
3 of my housemates work or have worked in a bar, 1 works at the student union bar, 1 works at a hotel bar and 1 worked in a bar over the summer in Toronto. All say that its fun and lively atmosphere but sometimes its long hours, not so bad on the feet/neck with the short hours but after a long shift your feet are tired at the end of the night.

Also i went to see a girl doing a ski season earlier this year and shes working in a bar. Also the hours are quite long but again she sais its fun, lively atmosphere. She said it was better than when she worked in an office for 8 hours. + you meet alot of people working in a bar who are pretty cool.
But i dont know anyone who works in a club, but from constantly going to clubs the barman is always working hard , constantly serving people and never stopping and i imagine that would get tiering.

Bar job is just easy to get. The money isnt that bad but its not great.

I would hate to work full time in a bar, that would be epicly tiering but part time could be good.
working for an insurance now, never worked in a bar.
In the air force I served as a waiter/bartender (:B)

Wasn't my thing so I hated it but we cheated our asses off with the tips so the pay was pretty fine. You really have to be an outgoing person for it which I am not really so it sucked for me.
:D one new years eve i left with £80 in tips that was nice!
Parent
I made 60€ on NYE :(

I usually had a one week shift with 16 hours a day and one week off. With the tips from the week I paid for food and parties during the week off. I liked!
Parent
been working as a chef for 3yrs but always with a bar added onto it so i know a lot of bar staff it's under paid and over worked to be honest mate :)
It's good fun, keeps you busy & you'd work a lot more tedious jobs for the samw wage. Always had a good time with the coworkers!

But as said above it's nackering, your feet will kill & you'll stink by the end of the night. Plus feeling tired & being a little slow or inadvertedly mixing up who's next can lead people to reacting lile you've just killed their cat 'n fed it to their nan...

Go for it.
I love killing cats and feeding it to grandparents. I like that and will use it in the future, thanks for the advice! :)

I've worked at large nightclubs, small pubs/bars, highclass a la carte restaurants, and high class cocktail lounges!
I work as a bartender in Turku Börs/Amarillo/House Of Dance & sometimes at Edison. It depends where you start. If you start like me without any knowladge about bar or restaurant business you will have long road.

I was lucky. I found very kind Ravintolapäälikkö. She said that they will teach me beeing a bartender. The learning curve was fast and a lot. I had to learn stuff very fast and training was very harsh. But after all it was worth it.

Usually when people start at bar or nightclub they are 1 or 2 years a plokkarit.

They pay good :)
