External HDD

Hai, I'm looking in to buying an external HDD.

Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

I was thinking about SSD...but the prices are too much of a downer. Sure it has speed, but it costs a lot and the size is compromised.

So just an old fashioned HDD (it may be a fast one :3)

Connection should be USB3 or ESATA plox

Thanks :3

cos if u're not using a file on the disk it goes into standby mode after a few minutes and when u need something that's on the disk it takes 5-10 seconds to open.

yes, 5-10 seconds don't sound much but if it happens 10 times a day it's prtty fucking annoying.
Parent
Well yeah it's part of the green function... Most external Hard drives got something like that nowadays

Can't turn that off btw?

e: Since I'll mostly be putting music and videos on it, it shouldn't really be a problem i think

It's fuckin retarded, that's what it is.

If your using utorrent or another torrentprogram you can seed a file with 1 kb/s, this will keep it from going in standby mode :) Got a samsung G3 1,5 TB myself and got no problems with the 5 second wait tbh ;d
Parent
I don't use torrents, I'm afraid.
Parent
Just download a small one and put upload at 1kb/s

Utorrent is lightweight anyway :3

Then just copy a program to the HDD thats always on, like IRC or something.
Parent
I barely use IRC these days.

It was just an example..............

Does it use USB or eSATA? (on samsungs website it says it can do USB2, 3 and eSATA, but when i check the shops they say there's only a USB cable (which i assume is 2.0))
Parent
It's USB 2.0. It's a nice ehdd tbh :P You got a mobo with usb 3.0 ?
Parent
Laptop..

But I bought it at my cousin's compushop and they have this option to install USB3.0 and when I insert a USB stick on boot my BIOS diag screen says USB3.0 so yeah I think I have USB3 :3

But doesn't it have an eSATA option then?

USB2 is kinda slow :(

Depends what you want to use it for. I only use it to store movies, music, tv episodes, all that kind of stuff. The speed isn't really a problem for that. You can't expect a eHDD to be as fast as a normal HD. eHDD are mostly meant to just store files and not to run programs and what not.

I would look it up if you got USB 3.0 or not ;d, if not you have to buy one of these:

I've got a laptop silly ati :3

I don't expect them to be as fast, but eliminating bottlenecks doesn't hurt :D
Parent
Yes.. you can use this card in your laptop...
Parent
Causing me to open my laptop and thus lose warranty. :P

'sides, my Bios says it's 3.0 so I trust it D:
Parent
No.. You can slide this into your laptop from the outside >_>

You can also tell from the color of your usb ports. If it's blue they are 3.0
Parent
lolwat

And, are you sure? Why would my bios lie to me? D:

I've got an USB/eSATA combo port and a normal USB one (and 2 more on the other side which are prolly normal usb ports)

e: there's a lightning bolts next to the USB symbol D:
Parent
What color are they ? :/ Could also be a power only usb port
Parent
Just black, and nah it's prolly cuz it's a sleep'n'charge port. :P just remembered.

Are they really blue all the time?

Anyway doesn't matter... Got eSATA so i can still go with that
