Blender is pretty good and its free.
Blender is perhaps the best way to start.
The cool thing about it, is that it has its own engine so if you become good one day you'll be able to make some games.
Start with 3dMAx (download 2011 version) . And why ? Cause this is the most popular and you can learn from tutorials.

This is what I could do in 1 week (and I am begginer):

Well I could work more on it but I am busy with other things
I don't know what you gonna do, but I use Autodesk Inventor Professional to technical drawing and make this 3D
help this lady out!
I once learnt the basics of Cinema 4D (C4D) and was pleased by the accessibility of it. For me Blender was way more complex to start with.
Download some Demos and try them out. If you're still a student you should be able to afford almost every 3D-program as there are mostly student-versions out.
Blender for open source or 3dsmax for shareware
blender sucks.

i also tried 3dsmax, but iim using maya now
Depends on your needs

1) 3Ds Max
2) Cinema 4D
3) Maya 3D
4) Autodesk Softimage
5) Swift 3D
3ds max for modeling, maya for mod. and animation. Maya is better overall (seen avatar? it's all maya pretty much), it's just so much more complicated than MAX though.
