Laptop + HDMI + TV

Alright, so I'd like to watch some my movies I downloaded on to my laptop on my TV. I've connected the two using an HDMI cable. I've got picture but I can't get the sound to work on my TV. I've read several solutions on some forums already but none of them worked for me. When I go to my playback devices it says the HDMI device is not connected so I can't select it.

Didn't work for me :

- Control panel - sounds - select HDMI - (reboot)

I'm in the understanding an HDMI cable can also carry sound so I shouldn't have to buy an additional cable ?

Anyone else had a similar problem ? All help is appreciated

Additional info : Toshiba laptop, Loewe TV

actually yes! ;<

did u try another one?
dunno, my laptop is too shit to have hdmi
Works fine with me, have u checked "select as default" in the sound control panel?
It can carry sound, but that doesn't mean it must carry sound. Although it sounds like there is an option for HDMI out in your audio devices. Could be a driver issue with the mobo or gfx card maybe? Tried googling model#/name and hdmi sound? Might be others with a similar issue.
check u drivers

Try to get your mobo and vid card drivers up to date (some need for sound as well afaik like mine did), and if that aint working check first if the cables are connected properly (you can get video but not sound if the cable is not plugged in right), then try a different cable.

If you got that sorted out, use this program to setup sound output

The problem is... you need to select the right device for sound.... BOTTOM RIGHT use the volume control.... change it to the HDMI sound source....
