Getting a new phone contract & it's the choice of 3 phones
Blackberry Curve 8520
HTC Desire
Samsung Galaxy S
Never had a smart phone before - what would people go for?
Liking the look of the HTC Desire based on reviews, Blackberry not really featuring.

Gah choices
Have you already watched some reviews on YT or unpackings with comments?
HTC are good no doubt
i have the google nexus one (which is quite similar to a desire) and i installed swype on mine too.
From these,i would recommend the desire.

blackberry is imediately out
and then personaly I would choose
htc desire
You're not gonna change my mind! :D
u think wow man this is awesome we are piece of shit and then theers the eclipses, eclipses are sick man look the Suns distance from the Earth is about 400 times the Moons distance, and the Suns diameter is about 400 times the Moons diameter and u think wow man we so special but no man then u look again at the pic and wonder wow dude why we all fight and shit:S? we are liek not even an atom and we have diferences and stuff why does this happend man? then i think about life man life is nothing either, one of those blowsup and u and your iphones and shit are gone. man mobile mena sshit u no
and iphone is only good if u have a vagina
i'm assuming the desire has the same.
you're just happy with your iphone because it's a fashion icon (which, it isn't anymore.)
Its good enough for the things i use it for, so the fact it may not be as powerful doesn't really bother me all that much.
This kind of contradicts what you said here, i wouldn't read this as personal preference.
If this was indeed completely unbiased, it would mean the iphone4 is indeed a better product than all three mentioned. I don't think there is a clear winner.
as i said before, this is absolutely pointless so ill just go back to doing what i was doing before.
The HTC/Samsung are both amazing phones and i would be happy having either. I'm just an iPhone fan and am very happy with it.
EDIT: The fact the iPhone 4 was slightly cheaper as I could get it as an upgrade on my existing contract also probably swayed my decision. I'd be happy with any of them :)
No. It's a fucking ARM Cortex A8 core, which is not optimized in any way that makes it better for Apple than for other applications.
Don't use fancy words when you don't know what they mean.
Although you're partly right; we don't actually know what the clock frequency of the A4 is in the iPhone 4 - we do know this; "The resulting core, dubbed "Hummingbird", is able to run at far higher clock rates than other implementations while remaining fully compatible with the Cortex-A8 design provided by ARM" (from wikipedia).
This seems to indicate that the optimizations you are talking about do not apply to instructions-per-cycle-performance, but rather just increasing the number of cycles, the fact that the Snapdragon is also an ARM Cortex A8 core should lead us to believe that given the clock frequency, comparing these should give a reasonable metric of the relative performance.
It has, however, nothing to do with the A4 being "optimized for their code".
Still, blackberry looks like a typical plain phone compared to android devices - so if you'd only use it from time to time, and want something more standing out, you should be fine with either the samsung or htc desire (though I've only used the samsung from those two - it's quite decent - but I saw some cheaper htcs and they were fine, too ). For texting virtual keyboard is enough, and after some accustoming for other things. From those two I think I would prefer the samsung - swipe's quite cool for texts, amoled looks okayish, and it doesn't feature htc sense, which I personally don't like, but that's just a wild guess ;)
The bb is the cheapest (like 229€) dont want the cheapest bb do we?
htc desire is slightly outdated, there are 2 new desires (z and hd)
Heard some good stories about the Galaxy S
Prices as I can find them:
BB: € 229
Desire: € 353
Galaxy S: € 464
Desire and Galaxy S both run on Android(which is a big plus imo).
Personally, I prefer the Android platform to iOS, but that might just be my stubbornness (I generally dislike Apple), and there's no guarantee that you won't find it awesome. I have no experience with BlackBerry. Owning an HTC Hero, one thing I'm seriously missing is a physical keyboard. I miss it more than I thought I would, perhaps you'll do that aswell.
But oh well, that's just me, as I said, go try them out, this is to a very large degree a matter of taste. And the CPU speed discussions are nonsense (even though i partly participated in it), seeing as this is an embedded device: If it's snappy enough, then it's snappy enough. Any faster processor is a waste of power consumption and money.
The Blackberry just looks shit <o/
But go find it in a store or something, I know how bad it hurts to find out you bought the wrong phone.
Sorry if shit don't make sense, beer is awesome!
I'll go for the Samsung Galaxy S
you must be mentally challanged to not jailbreak your iphone
best, just pay 400 for this bb in stead of buying that shitty curve??
In terms of build quality I think the HTC Desire and Galaxy S are pretty much equal.
In terms of pre-installed software, the HTC Desire comes with Sense (basically a bunch of widgets which is quite nice. But if you don't care about what's pre-installed and are willing to try out different apps, you could as well go for the Galaxy S.
I'd only go for the blackberry if you really want a keyboard and can't get your provider to sell you an HTC Desire Z.
Or wait a few months, there were a lot of good smartphones announced a week ago at CES, such as the Motorola Atrix (one hell of a smartphone) or Sony Xperia arc (beautiful device imo).
Wait a month or two.
