Isnt it just a linguistic question instead of an ontological one? When you ask if you believe in (a) god, you generally mean that you dont believe (a) god exists. So he disproved the shortened sentence by changing its meaning.
If you ask "believe in what?" you deny to know the definition of the word god.
Why is that a stupid answer? In times I need "Him" I will believe in him, but when not I don't :D! It's more a feeling I can ask a "superior" for help instead of having to do it all by myself. In the end I will figure it out myself, but when I feel completely lost I will find my answer in "God", though I don't actually believe in a god it does make me feel better which is enough for me.
