Configure the buttons inside the game?

I downloaded Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit yesterday, and I wanted to play with with my gamepad that I bought years ago, cuz playing racegames with a keyboard is just total fail.
But, when I start the game and try to use the gamepad, the buttons aint working correctly. I did install the drivers from the CD, but it still aint working :(
Any1 has an idea what might be the problem? Hope someone can help, else I have to remove the game again :(

I downloaded the game too, but for some reason the police sounds won't work -.- They used to work for a few races, now it's just fucked up :p
everything works now I think. Not sure tho :p I can use my gamepad while Im driving, but not in the menu :p Need 2 do that with my keyboard :p BTW, do you happen 2 know any games where I can tune my cars? And is that possible at this NFS?
NFS Most Wanted, NFS Underground .. I don't know if it's possible in this NFS... don't think so
