Plus I spent less on games when I paid £8.99 per month for WoW than I did when I wasn't playing WoW and would pay £30-40 quid every month or two for new games.

It looks quite nice gfx wise, the functionality is pretty equal to WoW, the combination of classes makes PvP a random guessing game.
only good point about it: gfx.
just play WoW, its obviously 100x more content and PvP is actually feasible.
if so you might be bored already and then rift is a rather similar alternative.
if however you are not bored with WoW there is no reason not to play the game that has been continously developed for 6years after its release.
maybe, if people stick to it, in some years Rift will have the resources and expertise to look to "catch up" to what WoW created during last years.
I will wait for GW2 because it actually IS different to WoW and its not like "yey i love it but im bored with woldcraft so ima play a similar game".
bored the shit out of me which wasnt all to unexpected as it originally was a quest-free grind only side-product of making GW2 which was only sold in korea(i think). they added some Qs and sold it to us europeans aswell to make some money while developting the actual game.
WoW is a lot better now (hardcores, which i dont claim to be, will say that aswell as casuals).
let me just name one example: they have taken the PvP "signup" thingy from WAR so that now you can join a "match making alike" group-making-system for dungeons or battlegrounds without going anywhere, using the chat or stoping your questing.
it will port you to the dungeons once a group was formed and will port you back out once you want it to (+ many of the Qs for the classic dungeosn can now be accepted in the dungeon itself, so you dont miss out on that).
and maybe most importantly for "newcommers" is the implemnted questhelper which makes questing enjoyable.
in rift it's a guessing game, in wow it's totally unbalanced
It's just another MMO that tries to differentiate itself from WoW by including a quirky gameplay mechanic (in this case: rifts) yet is nowhere near as polished, established, popular, stable or balanced as WoW.
Play WoW.
Regarding balance, I knew someone would be all "HRHRHRHR WOW BALANCED? LOL MAN". But tbh, after playing a million other RPGs, WoW is pretty balanced. Given that there's 31 specs and all must be balanced for PvP and PvE, it's as good as you can expect. Most games have half the specs to chose from and are ridiculously imbalanced.
Champions Online? Yeah I'll be invincible. And can fly. And heal (NOT THAT I NEED TO I'M INVINCIBLE). And 1 shot people.
Warhammer Online. Bright Wizard. Enough said.
