About sky (UK)

Just curious as to how many players or browsers of crossfire use sky?

I signed up to their broadband December the 11th and they finally activated it all the 1st of March, the tuesday just gone. They are trying to charge me for broadband and phone line connection use from the 5th of February and I am like WHAT!?

But what I really want to ask sky broadband users or if you know anyone with this service is:

Is sky broadband always shit?
Does it ever stay online for longer than 3 minutes?
Does it seem more or less Dial up to you?

On top of this all... I wanted to phone their customer services helpline to sort this out once and for all. Only to look at the last minute at the small print. "£9.04 connection charge with a following 5.4p a minute after that."

get virgin mate best out there.. following that BT expensive but better than shit sky GL
I really wanted to get virgin but they cost almost 4 times the amount as sky. Sky charged me £10 phone line setup fee whereas Virgin charged £160 I think it was. £160 is a lot seeing as I am only planning on living here for another 3/4 months :(

On top of this this was the shortest term (12 months)

well I got virgin internets

the fibre optics was put in for free and i'm paying £15.75 a month (started a 10 quid a month for 3 months) and i get a steady 10Mb/s any time of day and night, very little lag and yeh all round i'm very very very pleased with it

i can't comment for the phone and TV though (actually the TV seemed a bit of a rip off unless you went for the expensive packages)

when I moved from my flat in Reigate back to bournemouth I took my virigin with me and had no problems atall

Whats the 160 quid fee for ? :S
Parent
The fee was because I was moving into a flat that hasn't had anyone with a phone line or internet since like the 1990's (No joke)

I am currently paying £7.95 a month for broadband on a 12 month contract. Virgin also charges you if you want to move house (Which I am planning on doing very soon!)
Parent
ah yeh I saw that.

I had the problem with the BT line being disconnected in the flat I was in in reigate. BT wanted 160 for reconnecting the phone line. I'm guessing that since you have a longer contract with Sky so they don't mind doing it. I moved house and I didn't get charged a penny (actually they gave me £15 coz they made a mistake :p).

That 160 quid is only for reconnecting the BT phone line, they install their fibre optics for internet and TV for free.

SKy have already cocked up once which really fucked me off. They were meant to put my phone line in during February but never showed up... Day after I phoned them up and I said "I am so fucked off with you lot... Do you know your arse from your elbow?" This was just after they told me I had to wait another 2 weeks for another appointment. For my troubles I got a free upgrade (Great I had a day of connection so far) and 3 months free sky services.

complain to offcom if it carries on (the regulator)
Parent
Safe, thanks for that son.
Parent

Parent
Sent my 7th email in 4 days today! Already got the next 3 months free and a free upgrade. Hoping to get more though because this is a shit service :\
Parent
get through to customer services

before you even talk "i want to speak to your supervisor"

if they don't help you "i want to talk to your line manager"

done
Parent
GRATS :D nothin better than free:PD

Plus it's all relative. I happen to think Virgin are a pile of shit.
Parent
So you personally wouldn't say Virgin is any good?

I have already ruled out o2 because they cocked my mobile up and I refuse to give them money. Sky is shit. So it's either Virgin or BT now.
Parent
I can honestly say it's all about who you ask. I don't rate virgin, but some people do. It depends on your area, and some luck to be honest. I've found virgin customer support average/poor (although the people on the other end of the phone have always been pleasant); hard to understand - foreign call center anyone? - and generally quite clueless. However I know people that do like them, in the same area. If it was me, I'd probably of gone for Sky, so that shows my knowledge. Although my reasoning for that would be the simplicity of getting SkyTV and Broadband in one package. My 2nd choice would be BT, just as I've had them for years at this house (parents') and never had any issues.
Parent
Is sky broadband always shit? never had any problems.
Does it ever stay online for longer than 3 minutes? yes.
Does it seem more or less Dial up to you? nope.

I have been with skybb for a couple of years now and never had any problems with them at all, we have the phone package (free evening and weekend calls) and the upto 20MB connection, we dont receive the full 20MB obviously, a lot depends on the the equiptment in your local exchange and how far away you live from it :)
I have been without any sort of connection now for over 24 hours. I am stealing wireless net off my neighbor atm otherwise I would have to pay an ridiculous rate to phone sky up.
Parent
Not sure whats gone wrong there mate, i'm just speaking from my own personal experience with sky, plus as i'm a sky customer with there phone package also, calls to sky are free for me :)
Parent
FAKE BAZ YOU'RE A FAKE.
Parent
YOUR NOT THE REAL BAZ OWEN.
Parent
ive got sky for mostly every room, and its got a decent inet aswell...never had any sort of rpoblems from it at all :)
just the download is a bit slow thats all :(
Parent
I duno about the company, but just from looking on the banner thing u put in, i get a very kinda unserious impression. The frog stolen from i dunno, but i've seen that frog before (imageshack maybe?) and then like exactly the same pink-red color that Telia is using, which is like the Nordics largest internet providing company (?)
Sky is probably linked with that company. They are like the biggest TV provider in the UK (Or at least the top 3)
Parent
he frog stolen from i dunno, but i've seen that frog before (imageshack maybe?) LD made me laugh :D
Parent
:d 100% sure i've seen something like that one before, duh!
Parent
I have o2, I like o2
i also have o2 and like o2 mainly because its the only provider who can actually provide what they claim in my area and also the only stable connection ive had where i live
Parent
Been great for me mate.
It's pretty much lucky dip. O2 are great for some, shit for others. Sky are great for some, shit for others. Virgin are incredibly bad for me, but okay for others.

All these companies make cock-ups (and in some ways, I can appreciate this because we all make mistakes, and the systems are inherently run by humans).
We just moved to Sky..
Basically, they first week, it would go on til about 1 oclock, then it would stop working for the rest of the day.
Whenever we get a phone call the internet goes off for about 30 seconds.
So you think it's shit as well yea? (Still have no connection stealing this form next door atm :P)
Parent
absolutely awful lol, it sometimes just randomly cuts off as well
Parent
QuoteWhenever we get a phone call the internet goes off for about 30 seconds.
Sounds like the filter (i take it you have them installed on EVERY phone you have in your house?) could be broke.
Parent
aye i thought it was the microfilter, but theyll no take my fucking advice for it
Parent
the digital britain rollout is already upgrading all the BT lines...so by 2012 , we'll all be on 50 meg fibreoptic anyway. first time the government did something right in a while.... although they did get bullied into it.

like has been said previously. every provider will have a horror story like yours :( equally, it will have a guy down the road from him who cant say enough good things about them. its the inconsistency in service from the providers that does my head in, coupled with customer service skills usually employed by money lenders extorting money from the weak.

sit tight for now, im guessing youve no choice anyway though cos you've signed some watertight contract for 12 months that you'd have to fake your own death to wriggle out of... :*(
you think going up to 50mb helps anybody? as far as i understood this whole thread here, uk providers can`t even handle stable 10mb^^
imo you should stick to lower transfer rates, until you can guarantee everybody gets what he`s paying for. and then increase the speed :) imo the german system is better, u cant get over 32mb (afaik), most users have 6mbit, but its stable most of the time. i`m with a big provider, never had ONE SINGLE disconnect / connection loss / w/e in the whole 9 months im with them already :))))
Parent
all depends on where you live and how old the wiring is, a lot of the issues are down to old wiring etc.. but http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12611315 actually thats the wrong link lol http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03/03/bt_milton_keynes_fibre_to_the_premises_trial/ that should all change
Parent
sounds great, but i guess u`ll have to be patient until everything`s working alright :) could take a while xD
i`m just upset about providers promising you a huge amount of dl capacity, but in the end they just can`t deliver.
Parent
yeah been like that for years though always get half of what you're told you'll get :(
Parent
BT just upgraded me to 17meg after capping me to 1meg since i downloaded more tyhan 99% of BT customers. Too easy -x-
shutup ya squeeza
Sky is stable for me .. stays on forever
I had a 48 ping until they boosted my inet speed by ~40kb/sec .. now stable 98
i live in a shit area so i have a shit d/l speed
Quotei live in a shit area

true dat
Parent
I have sky. It used to cut out every 2-3 hours, but it seems fine now. I was only getting 0.70 MB/s a few months ago, but now i get like 7MB/s definitely improved ;)
