Ref is jost following the rules. So you basically cannot blame him, even tough I personally wouldn't have given that red card.

The rule is that if the player is attacking someone (doesen't matter if this is an other player, the refree, a spectator or even a streaker) he gets the red card.
Generally I like it as (professional) soccer players should stand for sportmanship.
