Usenet servers

I'm new to usenet / newsgroups and I'm wondering if there are any free (or at least pretty cheap) usenet servers which:
  • have a decent retention
  • have a decent speed (only need 50 Mbps)

Still looking for a torrentleech invite / acc btw: real chick

always been interested in trying out usenet

Are there any usenet clients that has some sort of filter function so that I can get all my files sorted after downloading? Like c:\movies c:\music etc?
Parent
yah, what kRa said.. sabnzbd is pretty nice for that, especially if you use the nzb watch folder and save your downloaded nzb files in the subfolders of that that have the category names. And tv shows have an extra feature on top of that called "sorting" with which sabnzbd will automatically create the structure you want, for instance /media/TvShows/Showname/Season X/Filename.mkv etc.

if the retention was more I'd give it a go but astraweb offer like 960 days :/

Astraweb also costs a lot more and the times I need a retention longer than 350 or 400 days are not many. And if that happens I just take a 24 hour subscription with Eweka which costs EU 1,10. In the end it'll always be cheaper.
Parent
suppose that's the key difference, astraweb only costs $11/month so would be 7-8 days of needing betetr retention and then it costs the same/more
Parent
eehm I think you are miscalculating. Astraweb costs 10 dollars a month with a 5mbit speed limit (which sucks) and 15 dollars a month for unlimited speed limit. So EU 7,00 for 5mbit speed limit and EU 10,50 for unlimited.

The occasions I need a retention higher than 350/400 days happens about 2 or 3 times per year. Make it 5 even. So in a year I need to spend 5x EU 1,10 for the times I need a higher retention. The other months it will cost me 3 euro's per month.

Summed up.. 12 x 3 = 36 + 5,50 = 41.50 per year with lightning and eweka on occasion.

12 x 10,50 = 126 for astraweb.

no, It costs me $11 for unlimited and I was talking about the instances where I would need better retention not you. It may only occur a couple of times a year for you but I regularly find old things that are in the 500-600 day range.
Parent
ah in that case then for you it doesn't matter much which way you go.

The 11 unlimited is the special offer (I remember getting one of those for astraweb a while back as well)

For some reason I just avoid services like this that are based in the US like the plague though.

I looked into it and you can actually get most of the big usenet providers for around the 11 dollar range if you sign up through an affiliate. I signed up with an unlimited account at NewsDemon which is on the highwinds server for $9,99 with 50 connections, ssl, 910 retention. But I've read around and there seems to be a lot of complaints about completion on highwind servers such as newsdemon, which sucks. Tried downloading a bluray rip of American Psycho (~860 days old) and it was incomplete and couldn't repair it, so thinking about getting another provider.

Problem is there seem to be at least something negative with pretty much each and every provider :D

Giganews is expensive as hell, but they have Supernews which is basically the same service but w/o the included newsreaders, vpn and all that shit @ 800 days retention. But the problem with Supernews and Giganews is that they've given way to DMCA and taken movies/games down from the servers. So that leaves Astraweb but with astraweb I've heard that there has been a lot of speed issues.

That's why I'm thinking about getting some european usenet provider since they do not have to care about DMCA and any american laws. But I can't find any around the 11 dollar range that has good enough completion/retention :(

Eweka seemed nice but it seems to be at the highwinds server, check the listing:
http://www.nextfeed.nl/

so if you're getting eweka you might as well just get one of the larger Highwinds providers like newsdemon or newshosting at $9,99 with more connections and shizzle :o

I'm pretty intersted in this: http://usenetnow.net/
you can get it for 10.49 if you sign up through www.newsgroupreviews.com, I've read that they're right up there with giganews for the completion rates and the retention is good as well. But I have no idea how the speeds are. My wlan is pretty damn bad so I'm pretty sure I need a lot of connections to max my speeds with 24mbit adsl. If I lower my connections with sabnzbd my speeds get affected quite a bit.

I have a 120mbit connection which is very stable, pretty much always get about 13 to 14 MB/ps download speeds.

I've had a usenet provider that had "unlimited" speed as well, which had 50 connections, but the trick is that each of those connections are capped to a certain speed so the total amount together, with most connections it "seems" to be "unlimited" but in reality it's still sort of capped. The problem with 50 connections however is that your system will have a harder time with keeping up with things decoding-wise. Since then I've always went for a max of 16 connections.

I've also used eweka for a long time and I've never had complaints about it, until my connection speed went from 50mbit to 120mbit. Eweka only offers speed up to 50mbit max.

About eweka's network, it seems they run their own things.. read http://eweka.nl/en/wie_is_eweka/

There are quite a few providers though that have a high retention with unlimited speed for around 10 to 15 euro's a month.

I've never had the need for a retention above 600 days and the few moments a year that I do need it I can simply take a 24 hour subscription with eweka for EU 1,10.

ah, interesting ;o
well, overall highwinds seems like a really stable network, but files that are older than 600 days seem to have bad completion. The thing that made me believe that eweka is a part of highwinds was that their retention was at 910 days. All highwinds resellers are at 910 days of retention. And if you google eweka highwinds you get a bunch of hits that has eweka and highwinds in the same sentence. Can't really find any real source that it's actually highwinds though. Guess I might just buy a 1 euro account to try it out and see if I can get that rip of american psycho with them :p

usenet is pretty damn nice btw, was worth giving it a chance. Do you have access to nzbs.org btw? and do you know if they ever open registrations or send out invites or anything like that?
Parent
I'm not 100% sure eweka is not on highwinds, but reading what's on their website it seems not to be the case.

I don't have a nzbs.org account, nor do I have a need for accounts like that. There are numerous sites out there where you can search for nzb's. The one I use most is nzbindex.nl and with a proper search string you can find pretty much anything. For instance, one I use almost daily is this one;

http://www.nzbindex.nl/search/?q=1080p+x264+-german+-realmom+-_born_to_make_you_happy+-illuminatenboard&age=&max=25&sort=agedesc&minsize=2500&maxsize=&dq=&poster=&nfo=&complete=1&hidespam=0&hidespam=1&more=1

Gives me all 1080p releases of at least 2,5 gigs in x264 format, filtering out some stuff cuz german's seem to flood usenet with all kinds of shitty german synced releases.
Parent
they aren't opening registrations due to not being able to handle the load of more users.

It's been like that for a while as well and they don't mention when it'll reopen. You won't need an invite when it happens as well
Parent
sandertje toch :-)))
