e: On a more serious note, I don't understand what Activision gains by not supporting dedicated servers. It seriously increases longevity and community spirit of a game when you can mod stuff into it.

Dedicated servers make it easier for illegal downloaders to play the game online, and it also gives the company less power over the game. But I still think dedicated servers are a must.

they dont want the game to be played for a long time. they want you to buy their latest title.
and the community spirit is not determined by mods but by steam accievements, unlocks, DLCs, ingame movie making tools, profile pages, customizeable content, ....
gaming became a mass phenomenon and is therefore shaping to please the vast amounts of casuals.

i played battlefield 1942, bf vietnam, bf 2, bad company 2, bc2 vietnam

theyre made of awesomeness.

call of duty 2 + 4 are good ones, the rest is shit (online at least).
