Journals
As there are numerous journals requesting suggestions from people about new TV shows to watch, I'd like to spend a few a minutes to spend a few minutes to write about a couple of my favorite comedy shows, which, sadly, go unnoticed by a lot of people and are, as I feel, massively underrated:
1.Arrested Development
The story of Michael Bluth and his dysfunctional family about their failing housing business. With Michael being the only sane centerpiece in the narcissistic group of people, it has nevertheless, in my opinion, created some of the most memorable comedy characters since Seinfeld. Its partly catch-phrase driven, partly multi-season elaborated jokes granted the show a , despite (or maybe because of) its only three seasons it was on. The good news, though, is that an AD movie has been confirmed by multiple cast members, such as Michael Cera, Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and the always sublime Jeffrey Tambor.
2.The League
A group of high school friends use their title-giving Fantasy Football League to get over their approaching midlife crises. Although some of the American Football references may be hard to get for non-AF fans (read: Europeans) the main appeal of the shows is the interaction of the characters. With a cast containing indie-filmmaker Mark Duplass, rising comedy star Nick Kroll and internet sensation Jon Lajoie, it only comes in handy that the scenes are semi-scripted. With the ad-libbing of the actors you will, more often than in other shows, see a genuine smile. The show has finished its second season this year and the premise is good, due to a growing fanbase and the obviously growing friendships within the cast.
3.Archer
Probably one of, if not the best cartoon comedy show of recent years. You will follow the incompetent, always irritating and inappropriate, yet staggeringly self-centered secret agent Sterling Malory Archer fight his way through shoot-outs, stewardesses' beds and the search for his own father. The voice-acting is all you want froom a cartoon show, with H. Jon Benjamin having been nominated for the 2010 voice over Primetime Emmy, and Arrested Development members Judy Greer, Jessica Walter and again, Jeffrey Tambor. It is currently past its second season with a third one confirmed for September 2011.
4.Louie
Louie is standup comedian Louis CK's new show in which he reflects his own life in humoristic way. As a divorced father of two in his 40s, Louie has no other option than to be depressed, but doing that in the most hilarious ways. You can't help feeling bad for him and laughing about his failures at the same time. The cast goes without big names for the most part, with producer of the show and Californication-foulmouth Pamela Adlon probably being the most notewrthy one. It has just begun its second season and I personnally can't wait for more to come.
Since this took up more time than I had expected, here is a short list of other shows I would suggest to anyone who hasn't checked them out yet: Parks & Recreation, Bored To Death, Curb Your Enthusiasm, the classic Seinfeld and of course the daily recurring comedy news shows The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report.
