DT & Mangini

Any Dream Theater fans in here? And if yes, any of you have already seen/heard anything (preferably live) with Mike Mangini in it? I'm really curious of wether he can continue the Portnoy legacy or even improve it.

Here a song from the upcoming album, technical parts are awesome, but sounds a bit too much like the commercial crap they've been making lately. Let's not hope so...

He's played with Steve Vai earlier, and if i recall correctly he was also on one of James LaBrie's solo albums.

When it comes to technique, he is an absolute monster.
Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31c-FL0ZlZ0, (skip to 1:00 for some sick action), and notice how many completely separate rhythms he's able to put out there. And how fast he is (I think he is the holder of the world record of fast single strokes - over 20 per second sustained over a minute) And he does drumrolls with one hand. It's sick. So, technically he is actually miles ahead of MP.

When it comes to musicality, I do not know much about him. He hasn't really played in a band and helped write music I guess, but judging by the song you posted I think this has potential. You can hear it's Dream Theater, but there's something different about it, and I like it. As a person, he definitely seems eccentric enough, it would not surprise me if we get a beastly album pretty soon.
Hasn't played in a band? Don't forget that he played in Annihilator for years, and although it might not be the most technical music out there it's surely a band of calibre!

But ye, I can't wait to see what direction he'll bring DT. Hopefully back to their roots, Images and Words > *, best album ever.

Here's a drum solo from Mike Mangini. He's playing it as an introduction to this concert.

Aswell as there is one live recording of Dream Theater's new song, where Mike Mangini obviously is playing;
