Joe Arroyo dead at 55

Colombian salsa legend Joe Arroyo died Tuesday at 55 after several weeks in a Barranquilla hospital, several media reported.

The singer reportedly died around 7:45AM after spending nearly a month in the hospital where his health deteriorated.

He was given his final sacrament Monday evening.

"El Joe" was admitted to the La Ascuncion hospital on June 29 after showing signs of a heart attack.

Following his hospitalization, the singer's health deteriorated and he was sent to the Intensive Care unit of the hospital.

On Monday, doctors said that the singer suffered from several organ failures after which the local bishop was called to prepare the legend for his imminent death.

The Cartagena-born Arroyo is considered one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century and dominated the Colombian salsa scene after his first steps in the music business at age 15. He signed with the legendary Discos Fuentes label in 1971 and played in salsa bands like The Latin Brothers and Fruke y Sus Tesos.

During his sickbed, artists like Shakira and President Juan Manuel Santos expressed their support for the singer.
