MAC Address Filtering

on my wireless network i am using MAC Address filtering to limit who can get onto my network, but dont have any encryption as it slows down my network loads.

Is this enough protection with just mac address filtering, or should i have encryption too?

No. It's possible to spoof the mac address (iirc, some cards even allow to change it).
For a (more) secure wlan you should use encryption. At least WPA (since WEP can be cracked in a rather short period of time).
Use WPA, cause wep takes only 5 minutes to crack...
