If you have enough money to spend, go for a Samsung Galaxy S2 or S...maybe some LG Optimus 2x...
But there is some cool HTC too, but in my opinion they are a bit overpriced comparing to some equivalent phones.
But any cute phone, with atleast 800mhz and a good screen (>= 3.7'), with CM7 support (cyanogen mod 7.. it's the best rom / support) from this list http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices
It's preinstalled on most smart phones nowadays but most people don't know how to use it since you gotta save up some kind of key-number of the person you want to call.
first get some nice rom (i use Android Revolution HD)
then pimp your theme with desktop visualizer (lets you change icons and other stuff)

then i would install lookyout security, juicedefender (also get the ultimate version.. its awesome), alarmdroid,skype, beejimradardroid,navigon,adyno,age of conquest europe, angry birds, pew pew, zynga poker, swiftp, andftp, teamviewer, app2sd, astro / es file explorer, androIRC,tTorrent, Quickmark, Overlook fing, faceniff, penetrate pro, barcoo, atrackdof, colornote,.. ye i think thats pretty much all i have (also mybackup pro and rom manager).
you can get all apps for free with a bit googling.

Also is Handcent worth it? Pretty sure my brother used it on his Incredible and at some point it lost like all of his messages.
