Laptops...

So, I'm in need of a laptop and I was curious if there is anything that a laptop nowadays must have?

I'm mainly going to be using it for work, although I want it to be able to run games like LoL, ET etc, well.

What sort of things should I look for when searching around?

EDIT: Is there much difference between the i5/i7? This said by someone who has no real technical knowledge of pcs at all :p

Too expensive :)

but the best by miles!
Parent
Best for what?

not for gaming or anything related to that.
Parent
go for alienware
Dont get any "iblabla" stuff, United Kingdomapple is shit.
Should have added, not looking to get a Mac. Been looking at ASUS/Sony stuff in the last few minutes.
Parent
Around £800-1000 max I guess.
Parent
Asus N53SV-SZ404V
Was looking at the Asus N52F as a possibility.
Parent
Great laptops, I also own one
Parent
same, will probably last longer than me ^^
Parent
Everything from MSI.

Have one and even TosspoT recommends it !
what laptop from MSI do you have?
Parent
QuoteI want it to be able to run games like LoL

Dota2 Beta invite :)
Thanks for the extremely useful information :)
Parent
there is nothing useful to say cause you have already been recommended to buy a mac but said its too expensive. so everything remotely acceptable will be too expensive.
simply dont buy a laptop if you cant afford a real one :S
Parent
Hah, what a stupid comment.
Parent
seeing your elaborate reply i really feel bad about myself.
get money poorfag
Parent
I didn't feel the need to elaborate and this also has nothing to do with money. For what I need, I know I can buy a perfectly decent laptop for the money that I said earlier.
Parent
cheap laptops are expensive leg warmers.
hf wasting money instead of buying a mac, XPS or an alienware.
Parent
Again, for the things I am going to be using it for I don't need some high end machine, just something that I can use and is easy to carry around. Money is also not an issue and tbh, it would be a bigger waste of money using a Mac that I wouldn't get the full benefit from anyway.
Parent
you overestimate to power of cheap laptops.
you pay 600-700 anyways so why not go to 800+ and be sure it can handle whatever you throw at it?
Parent
Fair point, although looking at Macs earlier the 13 inch ones start at around 1000, with a 15" jumping up to like £1,500. Not really prepared to spend that much, as nice as the macbook pros may be.
Parent
look at XPS's then
Parent
Is there much different between the XPSs and say the ASUS N52F which is £849? What makes the XPS's so good?
Parent
XPS is to dell what AMG is to mercedes, their inhouse tuning brand.
they are decent machines, reasonably priced and DELLs afterall (customer support, ...)
[and ye, AMG/mercedes is none of those]
Parent
Hmm, this might be a stupid opinion and quite possibly wrong, but a few family members have had/have Dells and i've never really thought they looked that good. They also seemed to break quite easily?
Parent
my sister (aweful PC user, had to fix things whenever we met) had one and that was quite rugged. also XPS have their own style (not as plain as normal DELLs) but i cant rly say anything about that as i dont rly care for cosmetic properties of my hardware.
Parent
Well what do you think of the ASUS N52F? I've used a few ASUS laptops before and been impressed with them. For £849, the specs of it seem to give you a good value for the money. Any ideas?
Parent
they only ASUS ones ive seen were awefuly slow, burning hot and out of juice after a 45min stream.
Parent
Hmm ok, what about DELL XPS L502x 15.6"? :o Slightly cheaper and get can windows office thrown in for a total of £869.

if you want specifics on the built in hardware you better find some1 who is more competent than me
Parent
Alright, well thanks for the help anyway
Parent
alienware laptop
Intel is 800x better than AMD in the mobile space
If you can get an SSD you'll notice a great load speed increase
SSD? :p

But yeah I've been looking at buying either an i5 or i7, does it really matter which one?
Parent
Why don't I find someone from Intel to help answer your question
Parent
Don't get that level of service with AMD!
Parent
I work at Intel... so here goes:
Ok, the main difference between an i5 and an i7 is number of threads. i5 has 4 threads, i7 has 8 threads (4 cores, with hyperthreading). If you plan on multi-tasking a lot then you will probably want to get the i7.

I would also recommend you look at switchable graphics, so you can use the Gfx when gaming, but use pGfx when you're not to save battery life. highly recommend the SSD as well.

Alienwares are really nice, if i wanted a personal latop, I would probably get the M11x. I use an i7 HP for work and it's great for everything I need. Sonys also have really nice IDs and tend to also be very well made, feels really solid.

Hope that helps!
Parent
Thanks for the clarification :)

So many to choose from I have no clue which one to go for :(

Was looking at http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/sony-vaio-vpcej1z1e-w-17-laptop-white-10683211-pdt.html

Slightly cheaper than others but it only has an i5.

EDIT: Thinking I'm gonna go for this one:

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-rf711-s04uk-17-3-laptop-spiral-black-silver-10810428-pdt.html
Parent
why do you want 17inch? Are you looking for mobility or will it be pinned to a desk most of the time.
Parent
Ah thats true, thought it was a 15, would rather have a 15 if possible but I wont be carrying it around that much. I edited my post, thinking about the samsung as the weight is relatively similar, then again its also 17.
Parent
One more thing to note... there is a difference in the Intel families from different generations... so i5-2xxx is second gen, i5-7xx is first gen. You're going to want to get a second gen since there's been a lot of technological improvements and power savings. The Samsung from PC World looks good, though yes, it is 17". Unfortunately, not a lot of manufacturers will make 15" with an i7...
These 3 XPS are 15" with a 2nd gen i7...

Though if you want to be gangster, check out the Alienwares...: http://www.dell.com/uk/p/alienware-laptops#!facets=41105~0~348449,93410~0~1450393&p=1

I'm not used to UK websites for shopping... I miss NewEgg! Hope that helps more!
Parent
How about this one? :p

http://www.johnlewis.com/231302273/Product.aspx

Can get it cheaper elsewhere, but thats got the specs on it :)
Parent
I think I'll get the Acer, as much as I'd love an alienware/mac I don't really want to spend too much.

Looks like decent value for money too.
Parent
Only 2GB of Ram!
Parent
Which one are we talking about now?! :O
Parent
Its got 8gig ram, the 2gig is the graphics card RAM or whatever? Or am I mistaken? :p
Parent
Have the same with i3 :D

Great laptop. Can run almost every new game there is. Although AC:brotherhood had some problems.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 had none. So quite nice laptop. And the battery still works nicely after a year of constant using ( university)
Parent
By Intel definition, i5 is the "performance class" and i7 is the "enthusiast class", or something along those lines. i3 is the budget class.

E: Oh, looks like someone beat me to it. Oh TosspoT, you so literal.
Parent
Alienware
I'll be getting myself a new laptop as well in a couple of weeks.

Basically it seems i5 2xxx + GF 540 GT + 4-8 gig of ram are the things to look out for as they give great performance for quite a reasonable price. The laptops I'm looking into are priced 500-600 Euro (MAX!). Asus, Packard Bell and Acer are offering such systems, though I would avoid Acer because they use those shitty floating keyboards.

The one TosspoT posted above seems to be heavily overpriced or laptops are more expensive in the UK in general, didn't look at your shops.

Edit: i7 is a total waste, at least looking at game benchmarks and I honestly doubt you'll notice a difference during normal work. Unless you do crazy stuff with it :)

MSI is for you.
Parent
go for asus RoG (starting at 900eu)

or MSI gaming or even Medion gaming laptop
if u want anything thats gonna last more than 2y go with business series, like Lenovo Thnikpad T series... For thous games all you need is NIDIA Quadro® NVS3100M. All thous low-budget high-perf laptops never lasts and are noisi as hell. Plus Lenovo has international support- buy it some were outside of UK for cheaper price, like USA/DE and u'll have guarantee in UK Lenovos service.
I would go for one with a 1080p screen.

I bought a new laptop last week for 699 euro.

System specs: i5 2520m, 8gb ram, gt540m 2gb, 500gb hdd 7200rpm and a Full HD screen (15.6 inch)
What make was that laptop? They sound like the sort of specs im after.
Parent
it's a bto laptop. BTO stands for built to order.

this is basically the same laptop, only it has a i7 2630QM instead of a i5 2520m

im in army with some shit asus "mini laptop" atm :/
build a custom one:
www.mysn.de
www.mythlogiccorp.com
www.sagernotebook.com

as tosspot said.. get a SSD. I would always go for two disks.. 1x ~80gb ssd for windows + programs and 1x a big HDD for data (music,videos,pictures,...).

other good brands are:
asus
dell
thinkpad

but most of them only have 1 disc slot.

guess it will be hard to find a decent balance between work (high battery, not heavy so u can easily transport it, robust) and gaming :S
