Basically this i5 + the GF540m is the best you can get for that money. There are also some Acer and Packard Bells available in the same price range.
Acer and Packard used to be _really bad_ back then, not sure about nowadays service quality.

edit: and that asus seems great for the price :o i own a Asus and i really like it, but the use is fuckingup the screen material :| it produces such a weird noise everytime i open the screen xD

I have Acer Extensa for over 2 years now, the only problem was that charger got fried after 2 days of use, got new one and everything is ok since then. I would say that every brand has some faulty models and some good ones, its always the best to read some user reviews before buying.

The thing is, i had 2 friends (and some other people i know), they had different Acer models, from the most cheap to the most expensive ones, and they all died after 1/2 year of use, even after warranty, they came broken. Shit service tbh, i would never buy a Acer.

well, to be completely honest, todays politics of laptop manufacturers isnt about making most durable models, but to make model which will last only slightly over warranty expiration date. I am satisfied with Acer, thats all I can say :)

got an acer since last year had some software trouble with it but the acer online support helped within hours since then everything works fine so i can't complain at all

I'm currently on the ASUS laptop that we were looking at the other day :p

i5, GT540, 6gb ram, full HD 17.3" etc etc

Absolutely love it, keyboard is really nice to type on and the build quality is nice :) Very happy with it :p

Pretty nice as well. I prefer the nVidia card though. Guess it's a personal thing though. Back when I decided against ATI the drivers were just so bad :D
Parent
yea ati drivers are so bad.

But on this computer you have the swtichable graphic. You can choose between intel hd graphic or the real graphic card. If you install ati/amd drivers it's fucked up and you have to re install windows since it wont go back even if you delete/unistall drivers. That's why hp provides their own drivers, and do not try to update them ;)

what urtier said, only i wanna add 1 thing.. just stick with Asus its no. 1
Their service is supposed to be pretty bad (just like most other consumer notebook brands), or at least can turn out into a gamble whether the device gets repaired or not (so I read, might be Germany only though).

The prices are just way too good though, so I'll surely play this little service gamble game :-D
Parent
well it depends where u buy it i guess. if u buy online the service might be equal. if u buy in a store its easier to repair cause with an ASUS u can just send the defected parts incase there is trouble with hdd, ram, battery or power adapter. overall ASUS is faster with repairs. only the last half a year was pretty bad cause of the tsunami in japan where they stocked a lot of their parts. but its all fixed now and the quality overall in an asus is better. acers might put slobby hitachi drives or hyntax memory while asus mostly uses WD and kingston. and ofcourse ASUS is a motherboard brand so the main part is always good ;)
