Computer broken?

So my computer started freezing several times this eve.
After the last freeze, Windows XP doesnt work anymore, it just keeps loading at the loading screen
When trying the safe mode, the safe mode just stops loading

Currently working from an ubuntu cd

What could be the problem? How can I fix this?
I installed a windows update like 2 hours before the freezes happened.

its time to format son :~>
been like 2 months :p
Parent
Reinstall windows/format
power supply maybe or video card, had same problem with old pc
or just windows is glitched
Doesnt matter if you only formatted 2 months ago or not, sounds like the winblows update cocked it up, try a format, cant do any more harm can it :)
just takes time, i hate doing it myself. been a year now since i did it last time :PP
Parent
Yes, sure does take time, dont like doing it myself really :)

maybe too much r_shownormals 1 crushed ur gpu?
download and burn some recovery or repair discs

i downloaded some 165mb repair disc when i fucked up my windows 7 bootloader, a bit of a different problem though, gl with it
Haha :DDDDDD

Made my night, thanks!
Parent
awesome haha.
Parent
Run SpinRite over night
Run Memtest
If fine, just format
Currently running a memtest from ubuntu
Formatting a partition using the windows xp installer freezes @ 20%

is it possible i need to buy some new hardware?
Parent
Check the CD, but sounds to me like a HDD issue

Try running spinrite dude! :)
Parent
fixed my pc

Installed ubuntu
fixed my disks
fixed wiring
Parent
your computer is fine, just 1 missing/corrupted dll from windows.

Format = win
format freezes @ 20%
Parent
How long did you wait? It can take many minutes from 20% to 21%?
Parent
waited 30 minutes
anyway, fixed my pc already
Parent
So, your CD is corrupted .. if you use "cracked one" could be from CD and maybe your cd drive. Try with usb disk if you can

Btw : you can try to repair winnoob with the original disk
Parent
So the download bar just stops or it reboots your comp or your screen goes black?

Give us your specs
also not able to boot from the windows cd? if u can boot windows trough the cd try a system recovery, if just able to boot the cd try a repair first before formatting
memtest - for memory
hdtune error scan - for hdd
And high-load furmark in combination with linx for testing psu, if your pc shutdowns its time to replace the psu.
