yeah i know, i was actually quite lucky because i managed to pass at german in high school. it used to be my main foreign language since i chose it on the 3rd grade but my teacher told me in the last school year that it would be good for my certificate if i changed main foreign language from german to english. of course i agreed to do it but the principal told me that it isn't possible to do such a change. my teacher was sure about it and told the principal about the new amendment(?) but he refused to change it from german to english anyways. we called some kind of syllabus senior inspector (can't recall perfectly) after it and he promised to talk with the principal. a few days later it had been succesfully changed and i was really glad about it because i was clearly better at english, didn't like german at all and regretted choosing it + there is a possibility to give a "S", which means "suoritettu" (=completed), instead of a real grade when you have an optional foreign language or something like that. basically they switched places: german became my second foregin language and english became my main foregin language. if i recall correctly you can choose english as optional language when you have chosen german, russian or french as the main foreign language (school-specific), that is exactly what i did. it covered other optional studies so therefore it wasn't possible to just drop out. english had been my second foreign languance since the 5th grade but even after the 6th grade there was a huge difference between my skills. mainly because i had more motivation to study english and i was constantly learning it from video games. surprisingly i got 9 in english on a scale from 4 to 10. i didn't have any german exams in the last 5 months of that school year and one thing was enough to pass it: i had to translate long texts orally from german to finnish. i have to admit that it was a fun way to study german but not so effective as you might notice and i think you can imagine how easy that was for me in general. after all it was a good thing for me but it didn't have any serious effect on my certificate, although i would have gotten 4 in german on a scale from 4 to 10 , which means "fail" and i wouldn't have passed high school that year.
