Work is fun!

Unbeknown to me, I had the 7 - 12 shift at work tonight. Around 20 past 7 I get a phone call telling me I should be in work, in a fit of panic I iron my shirt and set off into the night. 10 minute jog later and I'm entering the pub, it's pretty dead, there's about 40 people there, 2 bar staff, and hardly anyone is ordering. About 5 seconds after signing in and getting sorted, the manageress tells me and Chris to take a break; we start talking and I find out I'm getting double pay for tonight (That means around £9.50 an hour), this makes me quite happy.

I return to the bar and wash a few glasses, afterwards I ask the manageress what time I should sign in for, since I arrived at about half past, she says just put yourself down for 7 - 12, I nod and do as I'm told. Another 5 minutes goes by and she orders me on another break: I sit down with a glass of coke and start flipping beer mats, I got to 9! Returning to the bar I wash a few glasses and serve a few customers, but it's still dead. One guy pays for his drinks with a £20 note, He has about £11 change but walks away before I can give it to him: he was not a generous tipper and in fact had forgotten what he payed with. After about 10 minutes of waiting for him to ask for his money back I'm left with a moral dilemma: do I keep the money and treat myself or give it back? It'd be nice if you'd reply with what you'd do in that situation.

Anyway, another hour of standing around doing nothing much and it's 9 o'clock. The manageress asks me how I plan on getting home, I tell her I'm walking, she then tells me it's OK If I leave, I get out of there before she has a change to take it back. Saying good bye to Chris, who I felt bad for since he'll be working until 12, I jogged home. This means, essentially, I'm getting paid £45 for an hours easy work, Christmas is indeed a special time of year!

nice story, you have talent.

btw, if he didnt come back, i would take the money for myself
I'd give it back, it's not like you didn't earn enough extra money anyways. ;o)
I'd honestly give the 11 pounds back.
he'd already walked away.. i would have kept it as well. But if he had asked for it afterwards i would have given it.

You have too much time typing a story like that ;<

Yeah, I do, but at least It gave you something to read!

I came out from behind the bar and gave the man his change back, I guess I'm a nice guy.
Parent
yeah, I reckon I'd give the change back aswell tbh, but do it infront of your boss, if no senior staff were there to see the kind deed, I'd just take the money
oh and it's kinda funny to hear you ironed your shirt then did a 10 minute jog in it xDD

Haha yeah, I turned up at the bar sweating and panting, it was not a pretty sight, or was, depending on where your persuasions lie.
Parent
I gave the change back to him and didn't utter a word to any of the other staff.

Interesting dilemma. I'm really not sure what I'd do in this situation... if the bar were busy I'd probably just pocket the money unless he asked for it, but with no excuse not to I guess I'd go and give the money back...

I figure that every single action in your life builds towards the person you'll become, and I don't want to become a thief.

I'm normally scrupulously honest, but with something like that. I don't know, I've deliberately not taken a significant amount of change in the past as a way of leaving a tip, so I might just decide to assume the customer had too, if I were busy.
Parent
When people leave that amount of change, they generally do it to receive credit, either as a way of gaining the attention of a beautiful barmaid, or to receive superior service: it's unlikely they would do it without saying "keep the change".
Parent
I generally do it when I'm feeling rich and perversely socialist. I just leave it and walk out and have fun imagining what the waiting/bar staff's reaction is. I don't do it often though, and only when the service really has been good :D

It's nice to know some people appreciate the work barstaff perform, often with little to no reward. It makes me cringe when friends of mine, who work as waiters, regale over the £50 tips they earned over the weekend, for work that involves nothing but moving from point A to point B.

Of course, it's no more complicate than bar work, but I'd wager that most of the time a Bar is more crowded than a restaurant, and the customers much more rowdy. Anyway, I do tip when a bartender who is quite obviously being pounded, serves me quickly and kindly, I know it raises my spirits and I like to think it raises theirs.

I imagine if the sum is above a few pounds, it does prompt a conversation of two between the barstaff, and indeed between the recipients friends =o). The largest tip I ever received was 5 pound something, guy was ordering guiness, I guess he liked the fact that I actually took the time to pour a decent pint.
