I've got a SII. With Ice Cream Sandwich, it's pretty good. I'm glad i didn't buy a 4S. I can customize it without any risky jailbreak.
The battery gets empty quite quickly when you use it a lot though, but it's fine compared to other smartphones.
I'd buy this one if I was you, it's less expensive and does its job pretty well.
I have the S2, yes it is smaller than the S3, I much prefer this device over the iPhone. Everything is better in my opinion, the only problem i have had is that sometimes it gets too hot and restarts itself. This isn't too much of a problem because it has a fast boot time (faster than the iPhone by quite a lot anyway) so you don't notice it all that much. Also I know so many people that have dropped their iPhone 4S from just small heights and it has cracked, smashed and ruined the entire phone. I've dropped my S2 from shoulder height onto concrete and the only damage was a tiny unnoticeable chip on the corner of the casing.. All round a really good phone, would highly recommend!
I have the S2, you can change whatever you want. Iphone is shit, you cant even change the battery, in my s2 i have put a better battery and now I can play games or watch videos all the day and the battery has still 25/30% (the battery was only 20€)

I'd say get the one you like most, with android you won't get an as smooth experience, nor will you receive any updates ( . Android will however allow you to do more tweaking and stuff, but the question is if you actually are going to or not. Android also has quite a cool features regarding monitoring the battery usage of certain services ( same goes for data ) which can be really useful at times. iOS has no need for this at all as you can't have apps that randomly fuck up your experience. Also you might want to take a look at HTC as they got quite some cool phones as well.
If you get an iPhone 4S in any case you should wait till the 6 is released, as that will either drop the price of the 4S or you will be able to get a much more improved phone.
So what it basically gets down to, if you really want to make a good choice I would visit the store of a local carrier and look at the phones, which one feels better than the other because its really just about what you want, and not what others think.
edit: don't go for WP at this time, WP8 will be released soon and no current WP phone will receive an update ( only to 7.8 )
I have the iPhone 3GS (previous phone) and now using the Samsung Galaxy S3. iPhone is so much better that i recently contacted the store I got my phone-contract from to see if I can still make a swap. It's huge, it's not user-friendly at all, it gets slow after a month of useage (I don't even use it for games or anything) in short, I hate it and I'm going to get rid of it and get an iPhone 4G.

je bent gewoon een mongol, 4 collega's hebben S3 en allemaal willen ze niet meer anders, super prettig telefoontje en werkt perfect. Als je niet met een telefoon om kan gaan kan je idd beter een IPhoney kopen, weet je iig dat je hard word genaaid en die zijn hufter proof. Klinkt als een phone voor jou ;P
is die al helemaal geupdate? wacht nog een weekje tot jelly bean (4.1) er is, dan zal veel opgelost zijn. Om je accu langer mee te laten gaan moet je gewoon advanced task manager installen en die automatisch met locken/unlocken een zooitje apps af laten sluiten die je niet gebruikt. Helpt veel :) Je kan er gewoon niet mee omgaan lompe Rotterdommer :D

are there any big difference between iOS & android software? That's probably the only thing i would be afraid of by buying an phone with android software, i just love the iOS on my ipod touch
