Best metal of all time

Here I am this afternoon, trying to gather music for the upcoming exam period study sessions when I realized I'm really bored with all the new stuff, I felt compelled to go dig up all the metal all-time classics I listened in the last decade. That's when an idea hit me, instead of saving all the youtube links in a .txt for later use, I'm gonna make a journal about it on crossfire, so the other 6 maybe 7 metalheads of the site can enjoy and discuss!

I used one album per band, as the list would probably be overcrowded by Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica, Priest, Death, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond et cetera. I have to say though, this list really compiles the very best of metal, you won't find anything more complete anywhere else on the interwebs!

Awesome :)

Don't have time right now to make a bigger post so will edit another time, but agree with most of the top. Great to see Agalloch quite high up, above Blind guardian but the mantle is one of their best records, though not my fav :3
Without being biased much being my fav band, I'd have put a Sentenced record up there, especially with their early death metal stuff, for example shadows of the past! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadows_of_the_Past
It was close between Esoteric and Sentenced for 100th best :p
Parent
Can you show me your top 100 list? :)

Ignore me, just saw your edit :D
Parent
Edited it again, did a complete recheck of my stuff, I forgot to post Lykathea Aflame and Dragged into Sunlight... Albeit being rather unknown bands, the albums I linked are completely holy shit material.

edit: oh and The Ruins of Beverast xD
Parent
Can't say I know either, and one is even a United Kingdom band x) Will give them a listen.

Good call on Unlock the shrine. Fantastic album!

e: another German band, pretty unknown but great start http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qHy0dUJT8A
Parent
got any good german death doom? !
Parent
If you only want germans:

Ahab

Nadja

Ophis

Parent
cheers don't know nadja :)
Parent
how about greeks!?

i know daylight misery (and ofc rotting christ although lets put that in brackets because the last thing we need is a genre war)
Parent
I don't think greek metal revolves too much around doom to be honest :p. There are some bands that made some really incredible doom in the 90's, most of them are hailed as some of the best in their genre (most are classified as death doom or gothic/death doom if you wanna get anal with genres :).

On Thorns I Lay
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygaklA70EN8

(Early) Septic Flesh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXsIEokyHKI

Horrified
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fND-RZzgmEo

Nightfall (they use more aggression in their riffs but their core is doomy death)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H78GuP-s2BA

And some newer stuff I enjoyed alot:

Shattered Hope

Universe 217
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lJXs_ME7AY
Parent
BTW have you heard of diSEMBOWELMENT? According to some doom fanatic who has provided me with some really good stuff, they made the best death/doom album ever, and they are totally unknown to me... Gonna listen to it tomorrow.

Parent
yeah they played that in london last year but under a diff band name was excellent!!
Parent
New October falls is going to be in 2013 top 50 for sure! (Hopefully!)

Panda already beat me with Sentenced :) That's a personal thingie for me too. Great list, have to freshen some memories.

Might add something like,

are you a fan of eluvetie?!
Parent
Haven't heard them I think. How come?
Parent
best band with a hurdy gurdy

Parent
Ah, I have actually heard them, buddy is a big folk-metal-fan. Quite decent, from the better end of that style. I haven't listened that much others than finnish thogh :/
Parent
Up the Irons!
should be first imo tho :D
Parent
well, I am not a real metalhead, but I enjoy good metal. "The number of the beast" is my no. 1 metal album, followed by the "Dance of Death" (I don't really listen to albums, I have my personal playlists). Iron Maiden is my fathers passion and I wasn't really fond of it. But when I was in 2nd grade (I was 16 then, back in 2004) he came to pick me up from school, what never happened before nor after, with words "get in, we are going to Banska Bystrica". He took me to Iron Maiden concert, Death on the road tour. It was amazing and since then I love Irons, it was unforgettable show and Dance of Death is still one the best music pieces I have ever heard. I am strongly considering getting friday tickets to Seerock festival in Austria, this year they are doing EU tour and I really want to see them one more time (who knows how long they keep doing tours, they aren't young anymore).
Parent
my fathers been a fan since around '82 and my older brother has been into Maiden since 2000 ish. I started listening them "actively" at summer 2007. Was meant to go see them in 2008 but i fell ill :( Saw them in 2011 and the feeling.... absolutely amazing. Iron Maiden is pretty much the only metal band i listen to anymore, for some reason other bands just kinda dropped out of my interests. And as some wise man said, Iron Maiden are like a good wine, the older it gets, the better it gets. Up the Irons! :)
Parent
haha check our the album horrow show by iced earth

let me know what you think!!

Slayer - Reign in Blood

only 11th...

BURN IN HELL ! :DDD

/edit
+ i am missing Pantera !
When I was 11 or 12, I went to my father's job one day (he works at a bank), some 17 year old who served coffee there saw me, he had Iron Maiden's Brave New World and Slayer's Reign in Blood with him, he looked at me and told me "Here I lend you these, you can keep them for a while, then give them back to your dad when you are done listening to them". I was weirded out a bit but eventually I said ok.

My experience with metal at that time was up to Linkin Park and some classic rock like Deep Purple through older buddies and my dad. When I came home I inserted Reign in Blood first on the CD player, I was scared to death because of the cover, but I was compelled to to go listen to it. Now imagine an 11 year old listening to Angel of Death as his first metal song ever. 12 years later I still didn't return those CD's.

\m/
Parent
You were 11 when Brave New World came out? Damn. I keep forgetting that was 2000 (it seems much more recent).
Parent
I was 9, it was my first album -_-
Parent
Same age as me then, though was introduced via the Seventh son and Powerslave album but didn't get to see them live until 2003 for the Dance of death tour :(
Almost 14 when I was introduced to black metal with DMDS by Mayhem by some guy I used to skate with. Gave me the CD and said to give it a try, still got it somewhere too x)
Parent
Very nice list, although Rainbow - Rising should be in top5. Also I wouldnt necessarily pick Powerslave from Maiden or Paranoid from Sabbath.
No Hammerfall no best metal :s
No Manowar either, so he did a pretty good job.
Parent
do you prefer hammerfall or turisas?!
Parent
powerslave better than iron maiden, no son no
Partially agree Powerslave isn't their best album even though I'm not really a fan of their music, but "2 Minutes To Midnight" was in one of the GTAs though.
Parent
Personally, comparing Powerslave to every other Maiden LP is like comparing the Thompson to the MP40. They both feel almost the same, but something tells you that the Thompson is slightly better.

Also a huge factor is Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Parent
ok rime of the ancient mariner is awesome, but i still think iron maiden is their best album :D

either that or somewhere in time
Parent
I think it's Powerslave > The Number of the Beast > Seventh Son of a Seventh Son > Iron Maiden > Somewhere in Time > Piece of Mind > Brave New World > Killers > rest.

Yes, Brave New World is awesome.
Parent
Brave New World is indeed awesome, it was the first album I ever had. :)
SSS is also great.
Parent
Well, I consider Number of the beast to be their best album (mainly because of Hallowed be thy name), It's highly individual.
Parent
Same here, but mainly because of nostalgia (first few bouts of binge drinking while being forced to listen to this album 24/7).
Parent
Children of the damned! and 22 acacia Avenue
Parent
Absolutely!
Parent
tbh every album is great in its own way

If I had to pick a favorite it would be The Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, mainly due to Moonchild.
Parent
Well, this is your list, not mine. I wouldn't even know where to start, but there are so many bands missing and even if they are listed, you chose some peculiar albums. ;)
I'm intrigued to see your favourites :)
Parent
Like I said, I wouldn't know where to start and dare not even attempt to compile a "favourite" list. I could've made such a list every few years and get different results every time. ;) Not to mention there are always a couple of releases each year to add to such a list.
Parent
slayer not #1? im outta here
Needs more skid row and anthrax.
gonna listen em all
Number of the beast<3
Still remember when i was like 7 and went to one of Iron maidens concert in Stockholm Globen, truly amazing
i dont like metal
metal music thats that shit i dont like
Still taking the effort to post?
Nice frag btw, lugerownage
Parent
Ye, don't know why :p

Thanks, clutched it like a boss, learned from the best ;)
Parent
I would say Au is one of the best metals I know
never head, tell me more!
Parent
nice band, nice song, nice album. but you aren't gonna find a lot of guys here who like this kinda music.
Parent
in flames :3
who the fuck stickies this dirt?
will there be best hiphop of all times, and best rock, best pop, indie and all that stuff stickied soon?
nicely thought out admins
upset for topic being stickied? okay
Parent
well either the admin staff assumes that all CF users are fat virgins with long black hair or they plan to have a sticky for every single music genre there is.
or they are discriminating
Parent
Damn it, ya got me

Parent
no one really writes any journals about other genres of music, sometimes for good reasons.

hiphop for example its not possible to have an opinion on
Parent
it is, 99% of the hiphop made after the 90s is shit, whereas anything made 80s and 90s is only about 60% shit
Parent
damn, i'll admit i was being polite
Parent
Would add 1184 or the Arntor album by Windir too. Got me into Sognametal and Valfar was such a great musician.

RIP. 9 years deaded today!
I had Arntor at around #70. The amount of metal classics that should be worshipped is in the hundreds...

Parent
dat sticky
You forgot about Pain of Salvation - pick any album.
Didn't forget, The Perfect Element I was at ~65.

Parent
A top 60 felt incomplete, so I edited it to a top 100 (and it still feels incomplete lol).
+1 for Sentenced (though would be way higher for me, Down is still awesome though! Marked an important change for the band and has a few of my fav songs on there (Noose/Sun won't shine) :)

+1 for Insomnium, Warning, Summoning and Paradise lost. Would pick mostly the same albums too.
You a fan of 40 watt sun if you included Warning? Patrick is amazing.
Parent
Obviously :) I think I had labeled The Inside Room as a must listen doom LP last year.
I have to say though I'm not a really huge doom listener, I follow the scene but I'm generally more interested in the faster/heavier doom bands like

Parent
Haven't listened to a lot of doom lately, but need to.
Would still rate Mournful Congregation's "The monad of creation" right up with the best though!
Parent
Woopsie daisy. You are not gonna hate because I picked UtS over RutI, are you?

They know who I am. They got my shield, don't you get it?
Parent
Don't care, I like all albums equally :)
Parent
Megadeth - Rust in Peace (1990) (thrash) Best Album ever.
No black album, no win :U
Iron Maiden just officially announced they will make a stop in Slovakia on their EU tour. During next week I am going to book tickets for 27.6. (Topfest festival), I am just waiting for few more details about their concert here. I was already prepared to go to Seerock festival in Austria to see them, but this is much more convenient. Eventhough I am a bit upset that I won't hear some of my favourite songs since Dance of Death, Hallowed be thy name and Brave new world weren't the part of Maiden England Show in North american tour, I am pretty sure it's going to be unforgettable show!

Up the Irons!
Mainstream crap :)
I picked all those albums from my vast collection regardless of popularity, the only thing taken into consideration was their quality and how they compare with each other. However, I gave a bit more weight to some absolute classics that pretty much formed and solidified the metal genre, and that is a pretty high quality :)

But other than that I think I balanced the unknowns with the "mainstream", whatever the hell that term actually means in metal nowadays.

For example, is Pestilence or Gorguts mainstream? If you don't listen to death metal alot you've probably never heard of them, but if you do listen, their cds are some of the most mainstream you know. The whole debate is pointless. Anyway, I ranted enough for today :p.
Parent
It was sarcasm anyway. Metal as a genre has never been really mainstream, that was pretty much the point :) I think the list is pretty awesome, but it would be perfect if it was genre specific like for example best of trash in top 15 and so on.
Parent
NEGATORY, METAL THRIVES ON DISORDER
Parent
Don't stress dude. an old school metal fan like me totally appreciates your effort AND your collection!

(BTW, just for some self ego stroking, I'm the Greg Hansen in the liner notes on Cannibal Corpse's earliest releases :P )
Parent
what was your contribution?

please tell me lyrics
Parent
SwedenIn Mourning - Shrouded Divine
I love when people today call Sabbath & co mainstream. My dad was one the guys who brought "Heavy Metal" in to Finland and the stories how they got their asses kicked for having long hair and arrested by police every weekend just because they listened to "Satans music" are epic. Sabbath and other classic bands will never be mainstream for me.

Pretty nice list overall imo.

edit: Lol, just noticed your list is missing Pantera.
The list is complete without Pantera :PP
Parent
Well im not a huge fan of them either but Vulgar Display of Power is a masterpiece.
Parent
Nice list, but one band I'd have on there is Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of The Mutilated. Excellent album.

And while I'm a fan of Saxon, I don't think I'd consider them Metal.

MAJOR PROPS for adding Cynic. I didn't think too many people even knew that band!
Saxon not metal?! What would you call them?
Parent
Just hard rock.
Parent
Saxon is one of the major NWOBHM bands (and Metallica's biggest influence as far as I know)... I mean, they have songs named like "Heavy Metal Thunder"...

You can say that all Sabbath albums are hard rock too, and you would be wrong as well...
Parent
Well, we can agree to disagree based on personal opinion. Everyone has their own, none are wrong.
Parent
That shit is so mainstream, even I like songs from that list lelele
The closest thing to mainstream this has is he's on facebook
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HTl-w6e9H0

Let me know what you think :)))
Parent
Not bad ;). I only wish the guitar was a bit more diverse, but that's just me :p.

edit: For example on the second half of the song I was expecting something different like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7r1zH-QXRI#t=4m05 . (Seeing he is from from Wales I'm assuming you know him?)
Parent
Even though I live ~20 mins away from them I don't know them personally, only the guys other BM band http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Order_of_Tepes/3540304473

Hearing that live the first time was refreshing! Don't know too many BM bands/projects from around my way.
Parent
Nice! Gotta love local bands, here's some neighbors :p

Parent
frostbitten shit there do you know these fellas?

480p for not-kvlt
Parent
You should check out Alcest :)

Parent
saw them the other week w/ katatonia they even played some amesoeurs track :]
Parent
the bit where the chick screams gives me the horn tbh
Parent
Exactly, easy fapping.
Parent
unfortunately she wasn't at the gig though :(
that would have been fun

do you ever go to gigs??

i guess you like bm??
Parent
I love french bm, looks like i need to go deeper. I assume i can just start surfing from the related videos.
Parent
Oh man good luck, the french bm scene is huge, probably the biggest in the world :p. Depends though what exactly kind of bm you like, as the french are famous for their really occult bands like S.V.E.S.T., Antaeus, Deathspell Omega, Murmuure, Mutiilation, Blut aus Nord etc :)
Parent
Nothing is occult compared to Les Legions Noires. :XD
Parent
btw, if you didn't know yet, the guys from drudkh have a new death metal project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZArz_Vu0wo i've only listened to one song so far, but it doesn't sound too bad
Parent
seems pretty good i like that its all in latin thats really good metaling
Parent
Yep it's not bad, but I'd rather they tried to make Drudkh sound awesome again...
Parent
this reminds me that i still haven't listened to the new album -_-
Parent
In the meantime, if you were disappointed by new Drudkh and you wanna fulfill your ukrainian atmo bm needs, go check out Kroda (which you probably already know :D)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgiIN3YyKns
Parent
don't know, since i don't really follow metal that much anymore, i just listen to some oldschool finnish dm or dso, other than that i don't listen to a lot
Parent
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEROH_gMDSk

The mother of all atmospheric bm albums is out.
Parent
I don't have a tapedeck anymore. -.- I guess I'll just put Schattengang on.
Parent
Seems the only way to get Das Tor is to rip it off youtube =/ some lucky dude uploaded it a few hours ago.
Parent
Forgot NeO, fuck me... Portal of I completely dominated the 2012 list. Trimmed it to a top 100 and shifted some albums around. Should be finalized now. (edit: after I add motherfucking PolandRiverside as well)
How about Deicide's first Album (Dead By Dawn is an epic song) and Venom - Calm Before The Storm (Great Album where they really worked on the production of the recordings themselves instead of the rough sound of earlier releases)

This is my top 100, so it is purely subjective :)

Falkenbach <3

Dude of all those only Falkenbach made you go <3? :D

Noooo, but they stand out for me. Of course some more classics in there, Accept, Testament, Wintersun (one of the best live performances for me :3), not too fond of Danzig's stuff though, Misfits however...!

Yepper. That right there is a great list in itself!

Cant believe there's no system of a down in this list. Great list otherwise!

prolly too mainstream for these guys -.-

Mainstream schweinstream there are tens of thousands of metal bands in all genres and styles, you can't fit every one of them in a top 100! And like I said above, the whole debate about "mainstream in metal" is pointless and so 80's/90's. Anyway, the more you delve into metal the more you start enjoying bands of lesser fame. The same bands you thought you would never listen to when you first started out. It all depends what you like and what band will introduce you further into "the unknown" (genres). I find that the best way is to start listening to bands of the same genre as the bands you like (not talking about you specifically of course).

About those 2 bands, I never really liked them so much except some songs off Toxicity when it was first out and I was discovering alt metal.

no Volbeat no win
Added Xanthochroid - Blessed He With Boils. I missed it in 2012's list because it was released last week of December, it would claim an easy number 2 spot there. It's probably the best progressive/symphonic black metal album I've ever heard, it would be a crime not to include it here.
Awesome record!

In love with their Wintersun cover atm

Strongest contender for album of the year so far (I will update by replacing the old one once I find something better):

Entrancing black metal from Switzerland, from Darkspace's guitarist's band.
where's gojira ^^^^^^
From Mars to Sirius is at #160 something :p. Backbone is one of the heaviest metal songs ever!

I think Images and Words by Dream Theater and AEnima by Tool both deserve higher spots - AMAZING albums
