Normally when you give out red cards in CL as a referee in a crucial match such as this more than 30 minutes before the game is over you ask the point of view of the other refs to be absolutely sure, he had the red card out immediately after they fell on the ground...

You give red only when there is clear intention to injure.
These kind of plays happen very frequently in every major league, as a ref you either give yellow or just a foul for it.

Not saying they are connected in any way, but my point and I think I'm starting to repeat myself is that a red is awarded if there is intention to injure, hell even a yellow might have been harsh. Red is completely out of the question. By your saying Nani should have let that ball go to Arbeloa and pass up a really good position for a counter.
edit: I'm pretty sure Mourinho and co. saw that as a very bad decision as well, they didn't celebrate at all.
Only giving a yellow to De Jong was obvioulsy an ugly mistake from the ref. And I don't think the intention to injure should prevail over the risks that such actions can bear. Arbeloa was the first on the ball, Nani was late, too bad for him.
