hard drive question

so we have this other pc which they manufacturers sold to us with a hard drive partition, the HD itself is 250gb but they split that into 28gb on the C drive and the rest on D. so now that 28gb is used up, its starting to give the 'nearly full' message.

the problem is my dad is the main user of the pc and no matter how hard i explain it to him, he doesnt understand about installing stuff on D or about how much space there is and constantly clamours for me to delete stuff on C. i was thinking about simply moving files over, but i have no idea if thats going to fux programs and it seems like a temp solution only.

so, is it possible to change the default partition? (google isnt so helpful), ie when you go to install a program, it auto goes to D...
also, would a partition manager program let me change the size of C? i don't want to lose any files.

yes and thats probably the best idea to go for, instead of moving all the directories for your programmes.
you mean changing the default install location (C:\Program Files)?
it can be done in the registry, or TweakXP Pro can do it

regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion ->"ProgramFilesDir"

Yep :)

for ages i have had a 10gb partition for win, and i got very tired of editing the whole path when installing programs...

smack your dad's head.
Dad's just shouldn't be allowed on PC's. :p
Word.
I had to remove heaps of trojans and shit a few times, Ad-Aware found 191 stuff 1 time and 55 yesterday :D

backup the files on D, repartition D into 2 partitions, mount one of the new partitions onto a folder on the C:\ thus increasing your space on C
omfg just move "My Documents" to the D: drive partition

open up windows explorer

right click "My Documents"

and choose a new folder located on your d drive

So you basically install all your apps onto your c: drive but have all of your data on a separate disk or partition d: drive

:)
It could just be that your temp folders need cleaning up, some programs leave a lot of crap in for example C:\Documents and Settings\foonr\Local Settings\Temp (or similar).
Partition manager would be the best thing to solve it mate.
That's not a very hard question imo.
