Maybe because Desmond saved Charlie that Penny is a different person now. Or maybe she has a message for Desmond from Penny, it's obviously gonna be something about Penny as the rucksack had their picture in.

Well the most wierd thing was the picture on the priests desk of him and the old lady from the past flasback episode that knew all about des and stuff, so it just happens to be that he fires him , and he ends right into pennys hands ;o
