Router!

Yeah, I'm buying a new router. And since I don't know shit about networking, I'm asking you guys for advice.

Now, for what I'm looking for:

We only really need 4 ports.
Safety isn't really that important.
What is important is good support with drivers, manuals and preferably support by email and/or phone.
Easy-to-use configuration.
We're not going to be using any fancy-pants network solutions or something like that.

So I'm guessing one of the large brands like netgear or D-Link. But I don't know which one. The budget isn't really an issue.

On a sidenote, we're sitting on a real kickass connection and downloading like mad. So, if there's any difference between routers when it comes to handling high speeds and large traffic, I'd pick the best one!

i will rout u right into my ass!
nothings really necessary but the budgets hasnt got any limits? why dont you just take any random router?
Cause I want the best router! We've had a lot of issues with two D-Link routers breaking down so this time we went for a real noname-random router. Which sucks. Ass.

Hence why I was now aiming for something more quality.

Safety?
Yeah, I heard some nokia ones kick you in the face, be careful with those.
using d-link for a long time, no problems yet
if we're talking about routers - I would listen to that guy :D

I use D-Link 624, works without problems =]
I used to have one, but it limited me to ~4 Mbps (like a lot of the cheaper routers).

ive got a netgear very simple to use and set up, all you'll need is something like this http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/WiredRouters/RP614.aspx
I also prefer netgear

i was also thinking about getting a router so i informed myself abit...netgear and d-link are not that good afaik (i read several forum posts, especially about d-link which tend to break after a short time; netgear mainly compatibility problems)...a friend of mine recommended linksys routers which should run without any problems and are very reliable. u may have a look.

http://www.linksys.com
I went for one of these Linksys BEFSR41 after warm recommendations from Germany arni:

Quotethose blue routers are good. cant remember the name. erm... blue and black. linksys. best imo.

That stunning argument pretty much settled it.

And yes, I've had problem with D-Link as well. Two of them have broke down for us. One got electrified so you got shocked (?) every time you touched it. Nasty.
And yeah, I remember reading people have problems with Netgear and games sometimes.

That only has 4.2 Mbps throughput (see my post below)...

"one more from ocrana. and its D-Link... he wins!!! he wins!!!"

i have d-link 524 for a year now and it works fine
Mine is Linksys WRT54GL. Also have wireless if you need it, and you can update the firmware and put OpenWrt (linux) on it. I did that, and now i'm running a BNC on my router !
The BEFSR41 only has 4.2 Mbps WAN to LAN throughput according to this.

I wouldn't call that kickass...

Throughput for a number of routers can be found here.
Ahhh! The jungle!

Well it's too late now, misstakes' been made.

Edit: Almost all of those routers are wireless and we use wired. The ones that aren't wireless I can't find any swedish retailer for.

Most wireless routers have four Ethernet ports as well, and the wireless connection can be disabled.

I have had several d-links and I've been satisfied with each of them
my d-link 524 runs for over a year now. Had some problems with the wifi in the beginning, but a firmware update helped. It's ok, but I wouldn't buy it again, as it lacks some options I'd like to have, like detailed traffic reports and stuff.
Linksys WRT54GL does it for me.
