geeks needed !

If you aren't a linux user I'd say this journal is rather unimportant for you.

However, last night I was messing around with getting a newer, more stable version of wine working.
It was an endless struggle, which I this morning still had not solved.
I did this;

echo "app-emulation/wine ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge wine
emerge --sync
emerge --update wine

while trying to update wine I was told that my current profile was outdated, and I should upgrade to 2007.0/desktop, and the instructions were:

# emerge -n '>=sys-apps/portage-2.0.51'

# cd /etc
# rm make.profile
# ln -s ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop make.profile

# This profile is deprecated and will be removed on or after June 1, 2007

Calculating dependencies \
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "media-video/nvidia-glx".
(dependency required by "app-emulation/wine-0.9.38" [ebuild])

I can however not remove make.profile. It claims to be a directory, but isnt. I cant remove it, and honestly, in this point of time, I think this is a very bad idea hence I have now fucked up everything.

If I try to do anything, let's say emerging something random:

bitch etc # emerge wine
!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the '/etc/make.profile' symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

I have NO clue what so ever of how to proceed. Help please! :(

Oh edit, it's solved, thanks to ronner for his pro friends! Love ya!

Right now my problem is not wine. It is that I have kind of fucked up my system.

Use windows
you see, there are LINUX forums and there are GAMING sites... you chose the latter and it obviously turned out to be a bad choice. try again.
nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel are outdated.
you need to remove these two packages and emerge "nvidia-drivers"

np!
Those two are a later problem.
Parent
uhm "rm -rf /etc/make.profile"
or "unlink /etc/make.profile"

also dont work?
Parent
What does your /etc/make.profile look like?
TBH i never used gentoo, but i guess your problem is somewhere in that file.
RONNER I LOOOOOVE YOU!
yeah yeah, that's what they all say.... You DO know you still have to die by stingray, right? ;-)

u probably delete your profile or just the link just do like that :
eselect profile list ,and then search, default-linux/x86/2007.0 and do
eselect profile set #(numer)
if u totaly delete it just try to do a sync : emerge --sync

GL

tell me if its working
how does you make.conf looks like? did you set an arch there?

try as well: env-update && source /etc/profile

my make.conf: http://phpfi.com/241377

edit: make.profile is at least for me a directory...

oh and did you ever started a dispatch-conf after updating your system? i guess thats the problem there ;)
