what's the difference between a defining and non-defining relative clause?
afaik you need to use commas with the non-defining.
afaik you need to use commas with the non-defining.
E.g. : Our teacher* who teaches French is ill.
If you read "our teacher" you wonder which one? Because you have a teacher who teaches dutch, a teacher who teaches maths.. and so on. So the relavite clause defines the antecedent
- A non-defening relative clause just gives additional information about the antecedent. You dont need this information to understand who or what the antecedent is. You do have to place comma's though.
E.g. : Misses Jones, who has a big head, killed her husband.
You directly know who Mr Jones is because there's only one you know, she's your neighbour for example. The information is not necessarry to define the antecedent.
