ETQW review

Okey,

lets be honest. I havent played the game all that much, this is only a first impression.

Lets start with the bad news:
*movement feels wrong, something is holding me back. I cannot move properly, whatever I try.
*hitboxes and netcode are fucked atm. After hours of frustration I decided to try out the vehicles. Once I figured out you can use vehicles as a mobile MG, I started to like the game a bit xD Somehow you dont hit anything when you aim at the model, but leading my aim got me plenty of hits.
*There's a big tank killing me all the time. I owned it with the running strogg tank a couple of times, but then the missile lock owned me. Somehow I dont think the missle lock is really skilled, but neither was my rockets owning the tank.
*Reviving as a strogg is a bitch.
*gameplay feels slow: movement, weaponswitches, dropping medpacks, reviving, getting out of spawn into action.

overall: gameplay feels a tad slow compared to ET, spawning, killing people, reving, dropping medpacks even movement feels slow in the enourmous maps.

The good part
*amazing engine. Unlike ET the major factor in FPS is not how much of the map you can see but how much action is going on. Flying over the map only benefitted my fps as you the little details are no longer rendered.
*great gamepaly. Seeing the differences between strogg and human allows for a really diverse gameplay. Although I love SMG shooting, you cannot deny it somehow simplified the RTCW/ET gameplay. Differences between guns are interesting to see, although further balancing will probably be needed in the future. (like the 10sec reacharege pf)
*Strogg reviving is based on creating spawnhost rather then reviving teammates. Strogg take a considerable amount of time to revive teammates. You can have a backup medic who helps you in your revive (much like a dyna plant) but in most cases you will find yourself in combat and not moving for 2 seconds in the midst of a firefight is suicidal. As allies can revive fast it adds an interesting feature to the game, where the attacking medics can revive quick and give ammo whereas the strogg medics can create advanced spawnpoints, revive really slowly but also have a gun that doesnt need a reload, only has a small warmup and has 140 bullets :D
*It has a shaft. I just found out about it, but the game a shaft. Its a handgun, but a close range it did a lot of damage, I guess much like the old Quake shaft it is limited in distance but really powerfull.
*Seeing how shitty the netcode was, and how bad ppl hit I tried this venom soldier class. Although the gun takes 1 second to warmup it has an amazing spread an fire rate which allows you to take down allies by the bushes.
*The game is really a tribute to quake, seeing the quake 2 storyline and some old time quake guns init :P The overall atmosphere is nice, although the allies look as ghey as they do in ET.
*Jumpsuit is teh nice
*Proning doesnt happen in 1ms, its actually an animation which takes a little amount of time, just like getting back up :)
*its new
*it has has lots of gameplay
*you cannot nicklame
*some more stuff i forgot

overall: It is a great game, it will appeal to a lot of people out there. Gfx are well done, nice but scalable. Ingame art and sound are good, along with the overall atmosphere of the game. Thanks to two totally different races the game allows for endless gamepaly

gamplay: 9/10
graphics / scalability engine: 9/10
netcode: 2/10
hitboxes: 2/10
et related: 7/10
vehicles: to many
atmosphere: 8,5/10

overall score after playing the game 2 days:

7,5/10
I really like the gameplay, the differences in races and how that works out. Although the engine doesnt run decent fps on my machine, i am very confident that it will run 120fps in the near future. If the netcode gets fixed along with the netcode this game will be a great public game. I have no clue if this could actually work as a competetive game, considering the vehicles and sheer limitless amount of combos/tricks you can perform with all the features they put into the game.

This wus my review.

Shoutouts to:
flyer drone for pwning me, I hate you already.
id for making a nice game, now fix the netcode

gameplay = 2/10

it's terrible in this state, honestly fucking terrible. The last part of the sewer map indoor seems kinda nice, the rest... fucking ridiculous, it's like playing BF2, except BF2 was actually balanced
its nice how aiming next to the hitbox made my accuracy jump. And yes, the inside part of the sewer is nice indeed, along with the whole game being new :P

et related 7/10 plz...
Hitboxes and the spread sucks as hell. But the game is very good for a beta.
seems to be reply i get from all the ETQW beta lovers :/ I cant understand how you can release a beta of a multiplayer game with such blatantly fucked up netcode :/ I can understand how they did most of their testing on LAN, but that's not how the game is going to be played.

Well, the line of my expections of ET:QW was lower than my toenails. That's probaly the reason why I am surprised in a positive way.

I am looking forward for the final version as there are normally many changes compared to the beta. There are still many things to fix, but it has some potential. Remember the beginning of W:ET. The variety of objectives, classes, vehicles, etc promise many different tactics.

And I fully agree. You actually hit by random, not by aiming. However it's caused, it needs to be fixed asap.

I've heard that the first patch is coming next week.

"Somehow you dont hit anything when you aim at the model, but leading my aim got me plenty of hits."
That's called no anti-lag. ;)
its really noticeable when you shoot with mg at long range, ppl are running in a direction and when you aim in front of them you get lots of hits. When I aim at the model I dont get any hits, unless they aren't moving.
