umm I just started playing pickups when I sucked too, just be semi serious about it:P get the maps/ get some teambinds for tdm/ctf and just start playing.
If you're talking about duels then Q4 is much better!
The only downside when compared to Q3 is that you need to learn something new (everyone who played q3 thinks that he'll be 1337 in q4, which is not true in many cases and that's the main reason for all this anti-q4 whine).
Also, I can't remember when was it last time that I had problem with finding opponent around my skill level. There's really a lot of people playing it.
Team based modes are, unfortunately, different story :/
Plus Q3 has the wonderful promode, whereas q4 is OSP/Vanilla movement only.
