I dislike them too, they're ugly, take away all feeling and make sneaking hard/impossible and just forces people to overpower the enemy with automatic uberturrets or megatanks.
Even if they are removed, there is still way too much data on the screen. It looks chaotic and the feeling is ruined. A great example is the GDF sniper scope with those green lines - that's the worst crosshair I've ever seen in my FPS career! >:%
