Festival

For those of you who don't know (which will probably be a lot), every year in my home town of Coventry, The Godiva Festival is hosted.

So yesterday i ventured 2 minutes up the road and arrived at the event. First stop was The Ripps who played in the early afternoon. A local band whos sound is almost ska like, very up beat and energetic. These guys were really good and they pulled in a pretty big crowd considering it was early afternoon.

The next act i wanted to see were The Enemy, another local band from here in Coventry so i legged it home, grabbed some beers and a subway and prepared myself for the evening ahead.

So i turned up to the main tent and i couldn't move. It seemed as if the whole of Coventry had descended on this one tent just to catch a glimpse of their local heroes. A constant stream of people just kept piling in whilst a constant stream of people kept piling out soaking wet with sweat and covered in mud and the music hadn't even started yet! A massive round of applause kicked in as The Enemy graced the main stage. This is where it got a bit messy and more and more people were just piling into the tent with some crafty bastards sneaking under the tent fixings just to get a quick look at the stage.

I think it was the second of third song they played was away from here. Everyone went mental and the entire population of Coventry's War Memorial Park were singing along at the top of their voices. The atmosphere was amazing. So as i was standing just outside the tent enjoying the show, i saw someone i thought i recognised come flying out the tent. Low and behold it was the RTCW legend Jizz! For those of you who played RTCW back in the day, you should be on the same page as me right now :)

So after my encounter with a fellow old schooler, i decided to descend on the main event. This was it, i could not miss it as it's probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. The one and only hip-hop legend KRS-ONE was performing in the hip-hop tent.

For those of you who don't like hip-hop, you're probably asking why it's a big deal being able to see him. KRS-ONE is a world famous hip-hop artist. He is regarded as one of the best rappers of all time. Check out his wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KRS-ONE

So KRS kicked off the event and the place went wild. There were hundreds of people packed into a fairly small tent with hundreds more in the surrounding area trying to get in on the action. Luckily, i'd managed to get a spot right at the front inside the tent! People were bouncing non stop, hands in the air just enjoying the music and KRS's lyrics. Half way through the set he dropped a song and the entire area, inside and outside just went absolutely nuts. The song was "sound of da police" - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1VRZq3J0uz4

This performance really had everyone buzzing and then KRS decided to drop down into the crowd. He legged it down into the crowd and a path just seemed to open in front of him, the respect for this guy was fucking immense and it really added to the amazing atmosphere. He cleared a circle of people right in front of me and started on the mic again getting all the crowd to rap along with him. Here i was in Coventry, a pretty small city in the middle of England right in the middle of my local park brushing up against KRS fucking One! This was a day to remember.

If anyone lives in or around Coventry, i strongly advise you to check out next years festival. I've no doubt it will be bigger and better and it's all FREE!
