Xfire Improvements.

An easy way to get RSS feeds for specific section, the rss button only gives me 2 options "Journals" and "News"
RSS feeds for every users journal posts.
Old comments shouldn't disapear, morons.
I'd like to be able to see all my journals, not just 10 of them.
Why is there no "all" button in search?
Why is there no rating system for comments, posts?
Why do new journals still rise to the top, knocking off popular journals that are still active? Make the default to use a forum style system, and add an option to change it to rss.
Add a separate place for idiots to post links to their favourite youtube spam? Like a gallery for the retarded, but web 2.0 and filled with dutch users.

Anyway, it would make the site easier to use for myself, and probably others, what would be your suggestions?

i fully agree, eventhough i didnt read it

edit: ok i read it and your ideas seem to me very intelligent. If you need help to fight for the retarded crossfire user's rights i am with you
a talking sock omg :oooo

and i agree with you
Yeah me to, but with the addition that jews should be in the separate section also.
Parent
Well okay, not all jews, just you.

QuoteWhy is there no rating system for comments, posts?

That would only result in the majority of morons (which crossfire is, including me) to randomly vote on posts just to fuck up the ratings.
I think in the beginning it would, but eventually people would realise that it's a good way to get the content they want to appear more often, and would vote accordingly. Even if that means stuff I'd want would disappear, it'd still be worth it, purely for the fact that I coud bury everything fusen posts. Imagine, with the RSS feed for his comments, the task would no longer be out of my reach!
Parent
Galleries @ profile \o/

Besides that I agree with you, eventho I have no Idea what RSS feeds are or what they do :D
They're just lists which update whenever the site is. So, say, when someone posts a new journal, the list gets updated with the title of the journal and some of the text in it:

http://www.xfire.be/?x=rss&content=journals

That's the journal feed for crossfire. They're useful because it means I don't have to come to the site to see if there's any interesting content, I can just have it appear in my google homepage or RSS reader.
Parent
OKi thanks 8>.
Parent
Well yeah, I was thinking more like a video post section, but linked to the user profile so you can click "videos" in their profile and see a page with all the youtube videos they've posted, or even the ones they've plussed with teh new rating system.
Parent
And yes, I agree that a lot could be improved on the site.
how about giving z ppl who make a journal the right to delete coments made by other ppl in their journal
It's an interesting idea, but I think a rating system would add the same functionality, albeit with a more democratic flavour.
Parent
; 0 but its your journal and ppl are still allowed to read it so i dont realy see z point of democratic flavour and will ppl vote fair look at z world. My way is much more easy.
also less work for admins cuz most ppl will del z stupid spam
Parent
And probably any criticism, rating system > removal of the few democratic allowances that exist on this site.
Parent
so who needs criticism and plz when was z last time jou saw good criticism on crossfire its all whine and spam
Parent
For instance, I would be highly tempted to delete your comments.
Parent
thats no p if its your yournal give z ppl z power they love z power
Parent
No, because once you reply to someones comment, it becomes not part of the journal, but part of their discussion, so you'd give power to the commenter; but in their own right, the owner of the reply should have the power, and so should have the control, in essence the power balance is returned to the exact system we have now.
Parent
? but thats prolly cuz my eng skills
but slajdan made a good point i agree now
Parent
Well, sock is one of the them and having the ability to do so, flame comments would mutate into flame journals instead.

What would be most disturbing, having your journal/thread disappear after 10 seconds or having a comment in your journal that you don't even have to read? If it's some comments that you find strongly disturbing in your journal, that would be pictures, spacers, spammers, NOTers etc. then we already have admins to remove such comments and you can always contact an admin if it's something that have slipped their eyes.
Parent
i see z point
Parent
I tell ho's all the time Bitch get in my car.

and yus i agree with everything
good ideas
Would be nice if forums had the option of internal stickies only, so it would show up as a sticky in the forum but not on the side panel.
dont be scared to perm ban people who annoy anyone!
i wont name them..
I always agree with sock
agree its annoying that active and popular journals are are pushed down by spam journals :<
And remove the super secret invisible magical button 1 cm to the right of the flashing qpad logo.
"Add a separate place for idiots to post links to their favourite youtube spam? Like a gallery for the retarded, but web 2.0 and filled with dutch users."

That would be mostly the Journals section ;-)
Yes, but my point was to add another section called "User suggested links" or "Crap", in which people can post their favourite roller skating dog video. The "Crap" that the user posts would be visible in their profile, which would have it's own RSS feed.
Parent
I knew what you meant, but I wanted to say that TosspoT & C° already wanted the Journals section to behave that way. The RSS stuff and everything sounds fine though, but I don't know whether that costs enormous amounts of bandwidth?
Parent
Yeah, but if you use journals in that way, there's no middle ground between Spam and useful content, i.e journals and columns or articles.

RSS is just text, I very much doubt it requires noticeable amounts of bandwidth.
Parent
Yeah, I get your point. Might be usefull, but then again, it's all up to Toss and TaLa ;-)

Hmm... I dunno that much about it, should google about the cost of RSS and stuff. Btw, if over 10 000 ppl use it, it'll probably still cost something a bit noticeable, and with CF going down after every big GTV match lately, I dunno if it can handle that much. (ofc I don't know details as well)
Parent
The xml file for the RSS feed of xfires news is 24KB, times 10000 means that a whopping 234 megabytes of bandwidth are used.
Parent
Oh. I guess it's fine then, but you still shouldn't underestimate those whopping 234MB! :P
Parent
a rating system similiar to the one on digg would be nice (you can hide shit that got low ratings so you don't have to plow through Netherlands/Israel spamming idiots).
Yeah, or even the ESR system, which only allows positive ratings, no burying, would be an improvement.
Parent
Old comments shouldn't disapear, morons

that would be quite impossible, why? size of db will be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY big
Sites like Digg, Esreality, Slashdot, etc, etc, seem to manage, and with anywhere from 5 - 500 times the userbase.
Parent
well give crossfire some cash and NP, you'll have it

not every site got sponsors
Parent
They have ads, and they don't seem to have any problems finding sponsors for lans. In any case, storage is cheap.
Parent
if u say so, then its np at all.

they just need cash :D
Parent
Well, your'e the php pro, how much space would a database like that use up?
Parent
well the site im creating now have just 25kb of space with 14 tables (i believe in here's theres MUCH more) and maybe 2 rows of data in each table.

I bet that if an SQL statement that calls all the comments from the table is executed would take 1 minute to load... lol
Parent
You didn't really answer me.

10gigs for the comments? 100gigs? 1000gigs?

The older comment could be moved to a seperate storage server, so it doesn't impact current speed too much.
Parent
i never worked on a such big website so sry i dont know any exact value

and the older comments moved to a separate server is a good idea :)
Parent
I read somewhere that whole digg database is about 35gb~, tho I may be wrong :p
Parent
i can help btw :P

( pro php developer \o/ )
btw i suggest using the same system for the news portal in the comments portal (with pages).

Seeing the Bans!! thread.... lol i hate to scroll all that way down to get the latest comment

or else SELECT * FROM comments INNER JOIN news ON news.news_id = comments.comment_newsid WHERE news_id = 134702384 ORDER BY comments.comment_id DESC.

:DD::DD
buddylist ordered by flags which are alphabetical ordered.
How about customizeable buddy lists, with categories and ajax drag and drop, the kind of stuff which makes us nerd warm and fuzzy inside.

rss feeds were listed in a newspost and I even queried you on irc to tell you them all, plus there have been about 5 journals to do with them.

old comments don't disappear on purpose, they are normally culled for specific reasons

you can see all your journals, you simply need to know the right URL

why would you want to search every single section? I can't see what you would be looking for that might possibly be in all sections

a ratings system would be abused <-- FACT THIS WOULD NOT CALM DOWN OR CHANGE EOS.

posts staying afloat with inactivity ^- see above

journals are for retards, forums are for more serious chat
agreee and dont forget the "unread pm's" function
