cod2 directx error

my friend gets a direct x error randomly while playing cod2. the game crashes and he has to kill the process and restart it. the problem sux donkey dick. his specs are liek omgwtfbbq so that's not the problem. he tried uninstall/reinstall and different driver versions but it didn't work. he wants to know if there are any solutions APART FROM formatting.

any help would be appreciated (<3), any flame will be disregarded (nP)

AA enabled on 8800gts can couse problems in cod2.
