I have formated my computer, to install stuff from ground u.
Luckily I've kept all the drivers handy (not like Lenovo did anything to ensure that, they were scattered in hidden folders all around my C: partition when I bought the laptop). My laptop was meant to be installed not by the means of a clean WinXP cd, but by the means of a hidden partition that would install windows , drivers and all sorts of (more or less) useless applications, some of them would even expire within 30 days or something. I don't want their 5GB of useless software and drivers, so I make a clean install with only 1 cd (WinXP + SP2). And thus I save not 5 but 10 GB from my hdd, because I can delete that fkucing partition I'll never use in my life (actually, I've deleted it a looong time ago :).
Okey, clean XP, no net, no audio, no nothing! Go through the drivers. Find the wireless driver. Found it, one more reboot and I have internet. Audio driver. HALT. Error. I need some HDA driver that I don't have. Good game, lenovo! Let's search the net (since it's not my first reinstall, I saw this one coming). Some silly KB888111 from microsoft, that you can't find on their site anymore. Luckily, lenovo mirrors it. One more reboot, still no sound. I should also install the proper driver now, probably in one more reboot, I'll achieve the desired effect. Just finished downloading Intel's driver for my so-called graphics card, I'll install that one as well. I think I'm almost done. Now I need some software (OpenOffice, .NET, Java, Yahoo Messenger, CDBurnerXPPro, FlashGet, Winamp, Putty) and ofcourse everything related to ET (ET, HLSW, Ventrilo Mix). Again, lucky me, I have everything backed up.
Didn't you get bored yet? I hope you did! Should I tell you that Ubuntu 7.10 was installed within 60 minutes with everything working? Sound, wireless, IM, cd burning, compilers, windows emulator, graphics acceleration and the rest? It even detected my bluetooth device. Excluding the fact that I'll never make ET and vent work together on my shitty sound device, WHY do people still claim windows is easier than linux for DAY TO DAY usage? I still don't get it...
