cod4 multiplayer startup

bought the game yesterday, single player is amazing with no fps lag or whatever. I come to load up multiplayer, by clicking on the multiplayer shortcut, and the interface is like a real bad lag effect with the mouse cursor. i'm unable to navigate etc. help please?

edit: restart seemed to fix it :s

when i start multiplayer the taskmanager says it isnt responding and i cant do shit for +- 1 min, but then everything works fine, same with cod2
