Well many people seem to see the movie differently. But how I see it is the focus on the life and death deal over the 3 different stories we see. They are talking about life getting born through death.
And in the first story, the one back in Spain. Both of the characters aren't willing to recieve death. And therefor they get reborn to life on earth. The second story, the one which is supposed to be the present time Izzi is willing to recieve death but Tommy keeps on struggling against it. The third story, up in the Xibulba (spelling) he is finally ready to recieve death to be with her forever.
