c&c generals + zero hour

So after a year or so i decided to install this perfect game again and go through the singleplayer again (for the 4th time!) but theres a problem.
I downloaded the original game as i couldnt find the CDs but i found zero hour CDs I bought the other day.
So the problem: the game installs fine but it wont ever load - it gets to the splashscreen and then just quits without any error or something.
I've tried several installations, trying applying patches/crack in different order and stuff but it never works (i would've expected zero hour to work as i hava original copy of it - no need for crack...). I even reinstalled windows (that repair option). Running it in win 95/98/2000 compatibility doesnt worh either.
On the internetz there are several threads about this problem but theres no answer how to make the game work :o
Does anyone here, on crossfire, the ultimate hakzoorz community know how to make it work?

i ve never heard any old c&c fan calling the new games since RA2 YR, perfect game...
