Steam and et?

I had the idea after ready Splodge's Column "Save ET?" http://crossfire.nu/?x=column&mode=item&id=319

isnt it possible to make a system like steam, where u have to create your account and pay 20€ for et so u can start playing?
i mean is it really hard to code it or would ID have a problem with that?

imo i cant think of anyone "skilled" who wouldnt pay 20€ to get a competitive game like et without cheaters

i wouldnt pay 20 euros tbfh and who says that the cheaters who paid 80 euros or more for a bot wouldnt pay another 20 just to be able to play with it :/ bad idea

cuz everytime they're getting banned the account gets banned and they'd have to buy one account after another. (non detected bots tho :( )

i am not sure if thats worth it, there are too many new games coming out, and many people switch to them, like etqw and cod4!
So the time and effort developing something like steam for ET wouldnt pay off at all imo.

Who cares about the new games? For loads of talented gamers gameplay > graphics and all the other bullshit newer games give us, they just want a proper game!

yeh but still, the developemenet for such a thing wouldnt pay off for the developers, cause there are not enough people playing.
So someone from the community would have to do something like this, but i think it would just be yet-another-project like ETACE.....
dead before it even started.

to pay for a et without cheaters would be nice, but thats impossible if cheaters spent alot of money for private hax.. so 20euros would be nothing for them

Yea, lets kill the ET community EVEN more by making them pay for a free game.

You'd probably half the size of the community due to many people not knowing about it... therefore killing ET faster. Woo.

I'd pay for the game if there was a key system that would make it possible to globaly ban an account. The game could still be for free, but you wouldn't be allowed to play any officials without a key. And while we are on it:
a 20+ league would be nice :D
