I was just looking through n64 roms and saw Mariokart.
Then, I realized that I have an xbox with 4 controllers and an n64 emulator...
And then I thought, "OMG WHY HAVE I NOT THOUGHT OF THIS YET?!?"

what i'm looking for is a supermario bros type of a game where the mario character used a modifiable rod (extend, flame, etc) to defeat the enemies instead of jumping on their heads. i vaguely remember that the story line was about collecting lanterns (each guarded by a boss monster). tried googling for so long and i just cant find it (not even by browsing all the official nintendo mario games). oh yeah and this was on that family computer console.
