Computer Setup options

basically before I really Troll around, I want to know what makes are the ones to aim for right now- AMD or Intel, ATI or nVidia etc ;) I have been fairly happy with my nVidia/Amd comp that I have right now - so right now Im slightly edging that way.

if this be straigt up stats or opinions I dont mind too much.

Intel
E8200-E8400 for dualcore (gaming) or if you want quadcore (rendering, cpu intensive programs etc), wait for Q9300-Q9450. (q9300 is already on sale). The new 45nm quads will have FSB wall @ pretty low fsb and low multipliers, making them not very good for overclocking so I'd go with E8400.

The new 9 series by nvidia will suck cock (coming out in a few months),

which videocard to buy atm:
highend cards:

ati hd3870x2 - 250£
nvidia 8800GTS 512MB - 180£
8800GT 512mb - 130£

midclass:

9600gt - 115£
hd3870 - 120£
hd3850 512mb - dunno

lowend:
none

prices taken from ebuyer.com

out of all these i'd get the 8800GT. if you have a bit more money, the 512MB GTS for a bit extra performance, better cooling and better overclockability.
If you really want the best card out there atm and have money, hd3870x2.

SLI mobos are expensive, a decent one costs 300$, while you can get a good p35 mobo for 100$, so thats why I didn't suggest any SLI options.
sweet thanks for the info - Im a bit of a techy amateur :P

on Chips- you are saying Intel and not AMD then? could I use dualcore and then upgrade to a quadcore on the same board? or is that mobo dependent?

on the cards - I heard about the 9800 X2 (or something) same as above, would I be able to upgrade to this card on the same board or is that something I would have to check beforehand (is it even worth getting that card when it comes out?)

(replying to the wrong post twice, too early in the morning to type! :D)

9800GX2 is not worth getting as far as we can tell from now. It's gonna be overpriced and unless nvidia suprises us with awesome driver support, it's going to underperform. Also it uses an inefficient design, 2 PCB's, it's gonna have some problems. ati hd3870x2 is a much better choice if you want a dual-gpu solution without SLI.
Yes, get Intel. AMD isn't worth anything atm.

Yes, you can upgrade from dualcore to quadcore depending on the motherboard. Most decent p35 mobos will allow you do to so.
I'd suggest Asus p5k-e or MSI p35 neo2-fr or gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l / ds3r.
Read some reviews on any of these if you're thinking about buying, etc.

of course, but now im more narrowed down :) Intel only and most likely nvidia, thanks :]

The 8800gt is a must-buy for every new pc these days, it has an amazingly cheap price for a performance that almost equals the GTX.

Oh I thought you meant the "8880" as described in your aforementioned card.

ops wrote wrong just :DDDDDDDDDd

I like the 8888GTS more.

intel + nvidia
intel + nvidia fo sho!
Intel + nVidia, if you want to go Quad just grab an Q6600 and cooler and overclock, friend of mine has his running at 3.7Ghz. :D

If you want to go Dual the E8 series are nice.
not too bothered about overclocking, Ive never had to do it before and always performed very well.

This is good. Almost perfect for whats available now.
I'd get a 620w corsair or fortron PSU or something though, never heard about zalman PSU's. Also i'd get Western Digital harddrives, better than samsung :p

Samsung F1 = faster without overheating & being noisy!
"price-size"-wize best you can get nowadays!
Parent
Got a Zalman PSU and it's very nice!
Parent
what so nice in it? tell me plz, i dont get it
Parent
Silent, cable management, design (for casemodders) and good performance
Parent
way too much for a pc tbh
Parent
nice copy/paste from tweakers.net :D
Parent
For me, a very reliable source and made by guys with knowledge of hardware... should i add (c) ? :x

usually I vouch for smaller companies, so that would be amd + ati, but atm I go totally different path because intel and nvidia are just better :( (most games are optimized for nvidia cards)
