I need some information on this file format name, can it be used only in Linux and is it the same file archive format as for Windows like .rar .zip but only for Linux?

you can open gzip's using winzip and winrar too, meaning it's windows compatible but yeah it's more commonly used on *nix and linux distro's.

tar is a file format that contains multiple files into a single archieve-like file called tarball, but uncompressed
gzip is a program that compresses any one file and creates a file with the same name, but with .gz extension appended.
