i am thinking of getting the 900 model for 500 dollars (i want to get rid of my current pc, i need a portable computer for studying purposes).. i would upgrade the memory to 2 gb-s, afaik this way it is able to handle most games (ddr2 is very cheap now and rivatuner is nP4me)... i am planning to buy the 20gb ssd linux version (with the celeron cpu, since the intel atom's performance is weak)...

do you guys think it's worth it? do you have any experience with the 701 model?

I have the 701 model --> 10000% worth the price. This is how a laptop should be like, especially the new models.

edit: But dont expect to run any games normally on it :p , tried ET max I could get was 10 fps.

10fps=unhittable, so it's not a big problem :D
i've heard that quake4 runs with 3 fps at minimum settings:)

Yep, but Quake 3 runs without any problems.

what about battery life?
the 900 consumes more bcoz of the larger screen, but i hope the difference is not too big :S

Hm , well if I use wireless network & sound my battery works for about 2,5 hours.
But if I just watch a movie on it and disable wireless its able to last for about 3,5 hours.

edit: But the new 900 comes with a better battery too afaik

There's only 1 negative thing about the 900 :p, the power adapter. Its just like a normal laptop adapter, the 701 had a small "cellphone" adapter.
And remember that if you buy it in Hongkong you will get this keyboard :

lol at the keyboard :D i doubt it would be a big problem tho, it would cost 20-30% more in hungary, while arriving 4-5 months late with a limited number available...
(i'll just paint the keys if it's irritating:D)

Little secret: The 701 still isnt avi here in Holland :p I've bought it from a Lithuanian ebay-seller. So maybe in Juli 2009 I will see the 900 in shops here.

guess et works only on linux ? since it says rtcw doesn't run @ xp on it, on linux it does :d

Well ET "works" on both linux & xp. Same with RTCW, but on linux you need to install the q3 soundpatch & use wine to get it running.

But you shouldnt even try to play it :p, mission impossible.

If you close all running processes / load the movie from the ssd / have enough space to buffer you're able to watch 720p movies. But in the beginning its really slow, and during the movie it still stuters sometimes. ( If you have xp with all the codecs and media player classic and "overclock" the cpu to 900 mhz, you're able to watch hd movies without any problems )

And you cant see the difference between a 720p movie or a normal movie since the screen of the eee isnt highquality.

Yes, I've changed the OS on the first time to gOS. But it was not that nice, then I changed to XP :<

hehe, they are selling 2 versions of the 900
12gb with xp
20gb with linux
for the same price

i mean, who is gonna be crazy enough to get the windows one?:D buying with linux and setting up xp by myself is the best option imo :D

I would still keep a normal computer/laptop ...

I might order the 900 but im still waiting for some news on other umpcs like the HP UMPC 2133.

i need the money aswell that i'll earn with my desktop pc, i'll just spend half of that on the eee, and keep the rest...
i agree that the other umpcs might be better and competition would drop the prices, but i doubt this would have a big effect on the hungarian market:P i mean, we probably have like 5 eee's overall in the whole country, all taken from abroad as a present..

and my friend comes back on tuesday =p

a lényeg az, h nem ez a gép kell, hanem pénz, és emiatt jó lenne, ha le tudnám cserélni a mostani pcmet, lehet&#337;leg egy hordozható, de mégis sokat tudó gépre, és mivel kb 80 ropit szánnék rá max, az asus eee éppen megfelel&#337; választásnak t&#369;nik:)
